black poly fiber

I've been viewing the Model railroader DVD and one chapter discusses making trees from black poly fiber. I can't find black poly fiber anywhere..any sugestions?

Thanks, Jeff, but I tried those on line and neither lists black poly fiber. Is this something you have to go to the store to find?

I haven't seen that DVD so I don't know the differance between the black and the white fiber. or the blue furnace filter.The white and blue you can get at Wally mart.I just paint the white fiber green or brown and cover with ground foam to make deciduouse(spelling?) trees. The blue furnace filter material is used to make conifers. Both are about $3 at Wal Mart.

I get the white at Wal Mart then use Rit brand clothing dye

I thought that I heard that Polyfiber would not take color. It was said because of it being of a poly/plastic material. So how did you do the coloring to the poly fiber?

I bought some black polyfiber a couple of weeks ago at www.sweetwaterscenery.com and it arrived in a couple of days. Great stuff. In the past I had been spray-painting the white polyfiber to be black, but that is a MAJOR pain (plus it doesn't look as good). This stuff from this web-site is well worth the $3 a bag price, which will make a LOT of trees.

This time of the year (Halloween) some craft stores carry it. I used to get mine at Michaels, but can't find any there this year.

I use a product called Dye-na-flow to color acrylic quilt batting. It is the only paint that easily colors acrylic fiber. It is a fabric paint.



I put some in a small bowl and dip the batting into the Dye-na-flow. The paint has to be kneaded into the polyfiber. Wear rubber gloves unless you want colored cuticles. A small sampler pack is sold at Michaels. Larger quanitities can be found on the internet.



This is the brown polyfiber teased out and foamed. I use the green for distant foliage.

The Dyn-na-flow enables faux fur to be colored to make realistic bushes and grasses.



The bushes next to the pond are faux fur that has been foamed.
