Lighting effects, BLI SD40-2
Posted by NZRMac on Tuesday, October 4, 2005 1:56 PM
I'd like to add ditch lights and good headlights to my BLI's ( I know the prototype didn't ). Could I use a lighting only decoder, or a nice back emf decoder and use the motor output as well. If I use a motor decoder will the sound still run correctly or does the QSI decoder have a motor sensor in it?

Thanks, Ken.

It makes loco motors run very quiet and smoothly, Back electromotive force.

The Broadway Limited QSI is a motor decoder and sound system all in one. The main problem with trying to add something else such as a function only decoder is a lack of room for that decoder, especially in a diesel engine.

Download the QSI manual from the Broadway Limited web site, read through it, and see if there are any unused functions on that decoder before you try to add another.

There are three versions of QSI systems available, so you must know if you have Version 1, 2, or 3 in order to download the correct manual.

The original BLI manual that came with the locomotive should indicate which version you have.

Thanks Charles, I hadn't thought of that, I guess other diesels that use the same decoder board may have ditch lights?

Thanks, Ken.

NZRMac,

Just curious, what railroad name is your BLI SD40-2?

You mentioned above that the protottype didn't have ditch lights? By law, all Class 1 railroad locomotives that run on mainlines must be equipped with ditch lights. This includes the many SD40-2s that are still running around today (though their ranks are thinning) so you would be justified in equipping your unit with them.

Hope it works out for you.

AntonioFP45 is right, buy law all Class 1's have to have ditch/crossing lights. Also make sure what the ditch/crossing lights do on your model's prototype, do they stay steady when the horn blows, or do they flash, this is different for for some railroads.

They are N&W. I thought because BLI didn't model them they weren't used on N&W.
and I think they run long hood first.

There is molding on the hoods to resemble lights.
there is room in the shell for another decoder and ditch lights on the short hood end.

I forgot to mention that the ditch light law or mandate went into effect in 1997.
