Southern Pacific GP40P-2

SP bought these locos back in the early to mid 70s (only 3 I think). I would like to model one. I know there was an article in the Dec. 1986 RMC about modeling one. Does anyone have any experience kit bashing/modeling this loco. I would love to talk and get some insite, etc.

Hello brothaslide. I own an SP GP-40-2, but not sure what the difference is with the GP-40P-2... Anyway, I model N scale, and mine was made by Life Like. I also have a Cotten Belt GP-40 that I run with it. Those were the type of engines that ran around here when I was a kid back in the 1970s, and I sure love seeing them on the tracks again - even if they are only in model form. Oh well. Time stands still for no one.

The P stands for passenger. The GP40P-2 had a steam generator out back and flared radiators. See the pictures below. . .

Yes sir Mr. brothaslide, my GP-40-2 looks almost exactly like that... I just wonder if you might be able to take a regular GP-40-2 and modify it a bit to get what you want ?.
There's got to be someone out there that could help you get the info you need.

Here is a link to Richard Percy's GP40P-2 page. There appears to be additional space between the lead truck and the fuel tank, modifying the frame to match this will probably be th toughest challenge. There also appears to be quite a bit of the locomotive after the rear truck. You might try asking the SPH&TS if they know of anyone who has modeled one of these, search the index of magazines, or wait and see if Night Crawler has modeled one.

It seems like an awful amount of work considering you will have to splice 2 shells and 2 frames together in order for it to be correct. If you want to dish out the money for brass, Overland recently did a run of GP40P-2's, but they were sure hot sellers!
