New member signing on, two day delay?
Posted by NZRMac on Friday, September 30, 2005 2:23 AM
Just a thought when someone signs on for Trains.com membership, maybe there should be a two day delay, and full email, address etc before membership is granted.

Might stop the unwanted posts!![:D][:D]

Alot of sites do that. I fail to see how it cut down on unwanted posts, though.

It would slow them down. But, this really isn't that big of a problem.... yet.
This is only the second time I remember this happening, at least since I
have been here. Last time was the Big Al thing and now this problem.
This is probably one in the same.

It's like that overdue bill laying on the table... ignore it and it will go away![;)][:D] Dave

Full verifiable email address to which a link gets sent to finalize the registration. That way you at least know there is a valid email address.

Not needed, and just a delay. Hotmail addresses are a dime a donzen.

Some forums won't allow you to use a hotmail, yahoo or other free account. That usually stops them dead in their tracks.

The delay might keep some of these trolls that seek instant gratification away. I think the idea has merit.

Spacemouse, unfortunately you are right about e-mail addresses. Too easy to add more.

I don't think we need to punish folks just because they have free accounts. I have used Yahoo for years. There are always going to be losers out there that abuse the internet.

Still, it is better to let this blow over and leave the forum open. The harder it is to join, the less new people do.

But it might keep the incarcerated pervert sickos busy long enough to go to greener pastures. I don't "mind" the idiots as much as the waste of time reading about them in other threads.

True Chip, just the cleanup effort after they leave is time consuming.

Trolls seek gratification through anger. Nothing drives them away faster thatn if a bunch of forum menbers start psychoanalizing them and encourge others to pity them. A good defense is having a bunch of members that know this start a thread in which this happens. No name calling, no personal attacks, just treat the person as a case that is being talked about impersonally.

How did that jury leave Michael Jackson on the streets to show up here?

I use Yahoo but it is a fully paid account.

I support the idea of a two day delay in new members in light of the tra***hat recently needed to be taken out and dumped back into the internet's gutters and urine stained stairwells.

That's the kind of thing I've had to do on other registrations. I think it would stop the instant thrill!!

Maybe there should be a fine for joining this forum just to post insulting things. That might make them think twice before doing it again.[:D]

Ken, brilliant idea. Most idiots don't plan two days ahead. I've also seen an angry kid on this forum create a new ID to abuse with. In two hours he would have calmed down, let alone two days. Hope Bergie is reading
