How the heck can I make streetlights? I'm also curious about traffic lights.

Iron Penguin Electronics sells some nice traffic lights and control electronics. You can see the product at:
http://www.ironpeng.com/ipe/HOLights.html
This guy sells at a number of train shows in the southeast. Shows are listed on the website.

I model pre 1950.s in H O, I used snaps that a woman would use on her clothing, Half of the snap
is shaped like a old style street lamp shade.
You can either use a grain of wheat 12 volt or I use a 1.5 volt amber bulb, with a 556 resistor.
Paint the shade black, glue the bulb in place then hang it on a telephone pole or off a ceiling or what ever than connect the resistor on line, not to close to anything seeing that it might get Hot. Oh by the way the other part of the snap makes a pretty good brake wheel.
