I model from 1930 to modern day, and I always change the automobiles and so forth around on my layout to match the era that I'm modeling. I have certain favorite locos and passenger trains that I associate with these eras.
If I'm modeling the early 1930s, I like to use my Western Pacific 2-8-2 Mikado. If I'm modeling the 1940s, I like to use my Santa Fe 4-8-4 Northern pulling either freight or a consist of heavy weight passenger cars. For the 1950s, it's the Super Chief. If the 1970s, it's the Southern Pacific GP-40s. For the 1990s, it's the Union Pacific 8-40 CWs, and for modern day, it's the Amtrak phase V P-42s pulling a phase IV baggage car and passenger cars.

Anyone else out there that feels this way ?.

I once had an idea for a layout with that idea in mind.. Kind of a Time Warp Central.. The idea was an around the room type arrangement with each side representing a different era.. Here's the rub of the plan.. A train (1940s, ATSF 484 w heavyweights) rolls through the 1940s scene on one wall (or section) and then disappears into a passing siding leading to the 1950s scene.. What emerges on the 1950s scene is the 1950s (Super Chief) train. The 1940s train then, on hidden track moves back around to the 1940s scene, perhaps passing through another 1940s scene.. For each era you would need another loop of track or something like that to move the 'out of sight ' train back to it's proper era.. Each era scene could represent the same location but with updated buildings, autos, etc.

At the time, DCC hadn't come on the scene yet so trackwork, wiring, and tracking the trains would have been a bit of a nightmare (I wanted 4 different eras). Now, with transponding, you can always know where your train is at on the hidden trackage... Would be interesting but I chose and still choose, to stick with one era..

I had the idea of putting buildings on lift outs so they could be replaced with modern buildings, that way I can model the Idahoan with a 4-8-4 from the early fifties, and the next day change the buildings and run modern flag units.
