Suggestion for serious new modelers
Posted by tcf511 on Tuesday, September 20, 2005 8:33 AM
After many years of thinking about it, I've been in the hobby about a year and am building my first layout. I recently came across a ton of old Model Railroader magazines going back to the 1980s. What a treasure trove! Being new to something, you don't know what you don't know.[;)] I see all of these old building kits on ebay but often you can't tell from the ad much about the item. I've found a couple of dozen reviews of now out of production building kits in the magazines. I have a good sense of what ones match my building skills, layout, etc. and I have tips on building some of them. Now I just have to watch internet sites, ebay, magazine ads, etc. and pick them up.

Also, many of the Kalmbach books have their roots in articles in these magazines. If you get the chance, buy some one magazines and add to you wishlist. One warning, you have to get past the haircuts and prices in the ads but once you do there is a ton of great info.

Also the guys in white shirts, ties and jackets, smoking pipes as they ran trains
That's the way we were in our youth.

It might be best to fore go the old magazines and buy the books since 90% of Kalmbach's books is hash over articles..Save space as well.

My brother showed up at my door one day with five boxes, the type they pack bananas and lettuce in, full of old mrr mags. Vast majority were MR. I think I have almost every issue back to the late 60's early 70's and many before that. The oldest is from 1951 I think. Very interesting reading and seeing how things were done then.

You know, that's the best advice I've read on this forum. I think too many of us have a tendency to make our hobby work work instead of fun work.
