Industrial Locos?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, September 5, 2005 2:42 PM
Does anyone make a good industrial that doesn't look like a toy and run like an electrified mouse?

If not why not?

Surely many people would find an excuse for a Whitcombe or Plymouth?

I think Spectrum does (or did) make a GE 70 ton. I don't know if they still do but you could check it out.

I have heard good things about the MDC "Critter" although just about any small B-B switcher would be suitable for industrial use--a Walthers SW1 or Athearn SW7 would do the job nicely if you wanted an industrial switcher with a little more substance than a single-truck critter. The Bachmann 44-tonner (single motor model) would also do the job--the problem with the dual-motor version is the dual motors, but if they release the "DCC-ready" version with one motor, that would work too.

Er... sorry... should have specified "other than GE...44,60/5 and 70 ton... GM SWs and Alco S locos"... someone's going to refer me to Baldwins... could be okay... but I'm looking for REAL industrial 4,6 or 8 axle (rigid or 2 truck) rather than railroad locos in industrial use. Then again... I would like to run an early F unit as a zombie.

David,

The Proto 2000 Alco S1 is a beauty of a yard switcher. Crawls like a snail (on DC or DCC) and the detailing is terrific. I don't know what roadname you are running. Trainworld.com has the P2K S1s for $29.99 - $39.99. (Reg. $110) You won't be disappointed.

Tom

FYI: The only downside to the P2K S1 is that, in order to install a decoder into one, you MUST isolate the motor from the frame. Not a difficult job to do. It just takes a little extra time.

Time...It marches on...without ever turning around to see if anyone is even keeping in step.
