MA&G Survives Katrina
Posted by maandg on Sunday, September 4, 2005 5:39 PM
Hello everyone.

After 6 miserable days without power, I am happy to report that my MA&G survived the devastation of Hurricane Katrina. I am located 15 miles east of Jackson, MS where she was still a Category 1 when it passed. Since my layout building is portable (i.e. not anchored down) and surrounded by pine trees, I was concerned about its safety as 60-80 mph winds howled past. I was very blessed (not lucky) to have sustained no damage to the building, layout or my home. In fact, I had only three small limbs fall in the yard. This was not the case for my neighbor who had a large oak tree fall on his house. My wife, three young children and I are all fine, but happy to be back in our own air conditioned residence. We have been staying at my sister's home since Tuesday - the day her power was restored.

Gas lines are becoming better here now - I waited 30 minutes today instead of 6-48 hours like others earlier in the week. Further south in cities like Laurel and Hattiesburg, it could be another few weeks before power is restored. I'm sure you have seen the footage of the absolute devastation on the coast and New Orleans many many times.

Please remember all of the evacuees, victims and casualties of Katrina in your thoughts and prayers. I count my blessings everyday that my family, home and layout were spared from her fury.

The south will rise again!!!!!!

Cliff: Glad to hear that you, your family, your home, and your layout made it through this mess in good shape. I'm sure that all of our hearts and prayers (and hopefully some tangible contributions) also go out to those who did not fare as well.

Very good to hear! It sounds like most of our forum members in the Huricane's path survived well, but I still feel sad for all the rest so badly affected. I've been to New Orleans a few times, the most recent being two years ago, and I doubt that I will be going back for a while, there will be nothing to see.....
