Yellowstone Models

40 years ago I took pictures to scratch build a Yellowtone like the one in Two Harbors. Now it appears that will never happen. I secretly knew I never could do that. Now, I still want the engine on my pike, though I am no longer planning an open pit mine. Are there good HO models of that engine, especially in the DM&IR configuration?

I think you are going to have to start watching Ebay for a Yellowstone. Rivarossi made one years ago, with the open frame in the cab and the large flanged wheels. It can use a repowering with a can motor. I have only ever seen one on Ebay (I got it off the auction for a fairly large price) so good luck with that one! Option2: Ebay again for a brass locomotive I believe Akane made one in the sixties, Key Imports I think also did one (slightly newer age range of the seventies or early eightys). Depending on condition these can be pretty steeply priced (I have seen prices range between $385.00 US to $8-900.00US). Sad to say you are looking at a fairly pricey locomotive that will probably need some attention.

Seeing how nobody makes one of these loco's in plastic, your going to have to buy brass.
Just doing a quick search of some brass venders I was able to find some DM&IR 2-8-8-4's available.

Caboose Hobbies in Denver has an Westside M-4 w/caboose in stock. SKU# BC81813
it is unpainted with silght tarnish and is going for $1595.00
If you search around some you'll likely find a lot more.
The only plastic 2-8-8-4 available is the Rivarossi SP Cab-Forward, and it would take a LOT of work to convert into a Missabe Yellowstone.

Akane imported them in the 1960's. They can be found for under $1000. Take your time and look around.
