Can anyone recommend a brass custom painter?
Posted by maandg on Wednesday, August 24, 2005 6:03 PM
I have several brass steam engines which I would like to have painted and weathered professionally. I would appreciate any recommendations and contact information from someone with first (or second) hand experience with such a painter. Besides painting, I would like to find an individual who could ALSO add lights, a can motor, and even install a DCC sound decoder. If someone has used a custom painter personally, it would be great to have a general idea of cost as well. Thanks for any suggestions!

I am said painter. Please give me some time to find pictures of some of my work. (I can't remember what disk they are saved to.) I do DCC instilation. But as of yet have not been asked to do a DCC Sound installation. Motor changes and and adding lights come with the territory. I work primarily in brass I am in the middle of about 30 projects for a client. Another client has 10 more he wants me to do for him But we are still negotiating that.

My last steam engine for my present client took me about 34 hours. I charge 14.50 an hour. Plus fees for supplies I need your looking about $500.00 per engine as a rough estimate.

Articulateds will cost more due to their extra complexity. BUt I have not done one so have no relm of comparison.

My client has asked to hold off on his projects for a while becasue he is remodeling his house. So I can take you in right away of you are interested.

Email me at mrljames@hrp.every1.net for further discussion.

This model was painted for me by David Long in Bozeman MT. He has an ad in MR under custom painting and building. His business name is Kelly Creek Backshop.

He also remotored and put in a sound decoder while he had it.

I don't remember the price, but he'll let you know up front.

Be careful when sending brass out for painting. I sent out a Key Imports Bigboy to a local painter who ook it apart to start painting. He had a heart attack and died that night. It took me 2+ years to get it back from the estate and it was still in peices and missing the tender. I would advise that you get a receipt for the engine and have pictures of it before turning it over to anyone.

You might give Roy Schnoor a call. He is a local to this area and travels to a great many shows around the nation... sells and paints custom brass, very good.

Maandg, I just emailed you an eBay link to the best brass painter I know. Jim has been custom painting for over 25 years and his rates are very reasonable. If it doesn't come through as a link, you can just go to eBays O-scale section and put in "custom painting". He is currently offering custom painted O-scale brass for $149. Jim works in all scales.
