WS's Mod-U-Rail...
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 8:14 PM
In my short time here on the forums I have come to greatly appreciate and respect the opinions of the Gents and Ladies here...
So I'd like your alls opinion on WS's Mod-U-Rail; the OL and I are greatly intrested in using this product.. anyone here used it? or just general opinions..

You can take a gander of it at:
http://www.woodlandscenics.com/nnb/Mod-U-Rail1.htm

Also they are selling modular benchwork kits, you can find them on the main WS site page.. it didnt have a direct link for me to post here.

Looking forward to hearing what my betters have to say on this one.
Thanks in advance. [:)]

Peace.

Grandpacoyote

P.S. I found a link to their benchwork finally... http://www.woodlandscenics.com/items.htm/ModuleStands#ST4790

Overpriced for what you get -- practically everything is already done for you, so you miss the enjoyment of building your own, experimenting with different techniques, and learning from the experience.

I think the big thing with these is it's a no brainer way to do it.You don't have to shop here for your road bed and there for your scenery and a third place for your benchwork. But you definatly pay a premium price for it. All WS products are made to look very "seamless" when used together. This is good for people that don't want waiste time decideing who makes the best ground foam or trees or roadbed. You just accept useing all WS products and go for it.Nothing wrong with it . They make good stuff. I'd like to see the cost of the benchwork PLUS shipping though.[2c]

I was able to find the modules at wholesaletrains.com for a very resonable price.. very good discount indeed. Which is one of the reasons I continued to look at it.[;)]

[;)] Well I loved the motto in the ad, spoke well to me of modeling the Super Chief.. Every -Inch-.. [;)][;)][;)]

You know I did actually pause for a moment though before using that pic for exactly that reason... but this is the "logic" I arrived at as a person of Native decent myself.. The Lakota Nation to be exact (Hi ye! Pila maya Mitakuye oyasin!) If they wi***o get offended by such they can bring it to me and we can talk it out Voice to Voice. [:)]

Peace.

in the beginning of the video they ask if you know it takes hundreds of hours of planning to design a model railroad ... as if this system eliminates that , which it doesn't . it also doesn't seem to include any kind of benchwork to hold the layout off the floor so you're still going to have to use those nasty powertools . and you still have to do some modifications to the modules because i've never seen a room yet that would fit some exact multiple of a 3 foot module.

so i guess they look pretty cool , and doing a couple of them would be a great way to get into model railroading and learning the WS scenery system , but i can't imagine building a whole layout with them.

just for fun i priced out the cost of building an around the walls layout in a 12x12 room . no islands , nothing fancy , and assuming a duckunder at the door .
8 x straight module @ 73.49 = 587.92
4 x corner module @ 88.99 = 355.96
total = 943.98

now that does include a lot of scenery material , but i suspect that using pink or blue foam , crumpled newspapers and plaster cloth you'd still have enough money left over to buy all the other scenery stuff (ballast , roadbed , ground foam , paint etc) and probably some track too

Good point Ereimer! [tup]

As devils advocate I have to add though that WS is running a buy 5 get a 6th straight module free offer so that would make the total 796.90... and they also have a modular benchwork to go with it..

that being said however, you make a fine point and perhap I'll do a cost analysis on the total package.. take the list of what they include find the prices for that and see if it could be done cheaper.

Thanks again, this is a great help so far guys.

I think you could do the same with a decent benchwork and foam, buy the WS products separately and have fun making all the layout from scratch. You would then have money left over to buy more cars!!

BTW what is your quote from the profile from? Is that a movie? Seems slightly familiar.

I dont have the power because I have the monkeys, I have the power because I'll let the monkeys out! ?

It's from a Canadian sketch comedy group called The Kids in the Hall.. The OL turned me onto them and she used that quote in relationship to me so much it stuck.. Funny but true story when she recently went into the hospital for her knee replacement surgery.. she was so dopey from the drugs after the opertion that as she was being put up for the night she babbled that quote to me... [:D][:p] what must the nurse have thought! *chuckles*
