60' Heavyweights.
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, June 20, 2005 5:25 AM
Morning All,

I know I have posted a few posts here before about these coaches, but I finally got my Rivarossi SP 4 coach 60’ Heavyweight set through and they are absolutely BRILLAINT!

My only problem is that I want to extend my rake, but Rivarossi never offered them as single cars, and Walthers do not produce them in SP Delux Green!

Unfortunately I do not have the time to get the undecorated ones and paint them up, so looks like my 4 car rake will have to do for the time being.

I see that Walthers are going to discontinue making the 60' Heavyweigths in their trainline series - why? I hope they are not going to simply re-package them as Standard Walthers and start selling them at a higher price?

Anyone got any thoughts on the above, or just been pleased with their 60's?

Regards,

Stephen.

Stephen,

I agree with you that the 60' heavyweight passenger cars by Rivarossi (Walthers Trainline) are superb. I use them extensively since the curve radius is 24" and 22" on my double mainline track. The longer passenger cars either won't work or at least don't look very prototypical when going around the curves.

We need to start a web site to swap the extra cars from the 4-car set. I could use more coaches but I will not buy multiple 4-car sets which is the only way to do it unless and until someone produces individual cars. I was told that the reason Walthers is discontinuing production of the cars is that Walthers simply acquired the remaining supply of previously produced cars from Rivarossi. Once they are sold, bye bye.

Rich,

That is not the news I wanted to hear! Looks like I might be forced to purchase another set then sell the RPO and Baggage. Even so that would still only give me a six car rake with two coaches!

I know Rivarossi are now owned by Hornby, I wonder whether they have any plans to re-introduce these cars at somepoint?

Regards,

Stephen.

Well, at least with these cars, the baggage and the RPO shouldn't be too hard to sell- there are quite a few folks who are specifically interested in the baggage car and the RPO, who aren't especially interested in the combine or the coach.
I ended up buying a couple of four-car sets (I forget which road names) just to get one of the RPOs and a couple of the baggage cars- for the roads I model, the baggage car is the most useful part of the set, since there hasn't been any other high-quality 60-foot baggage car released in a couple of decades.

I'd guess Hornby will be looking to re-release them - the tooling is still fairly new and there's clearly a demand for them. Might be advisable to email them and ask - if enough people do that they'll probably start making them again.

Matt,

I have done just that - e-mailed Hornby and asked whether they will be producing the 60's again, and if so whether they will be in single car packs and what the time scale will be! Sit tight and when I get a responce I will put it in this post.

Okay so if I bought another set, would anyone be interested in buying the RPO and baggage off me?!?!

Regards,

Stephen.
