Congratulations!!! I think you will be quite pleased. I have seen a few of those so far at the local model railroad club. VERY nice engine!! The whistle is also authentic for the J class. I think you will be quite pleased.

This past weekend I heard my first N scale sound! Yes, at a model railroad get together some fellows had an N scale 50' boxcar with diesel sounds - engine, bell, horn. And a steam engine with the sound in the tender. Sure was strange hearing these operating sounds from such a teeny source! I assume their installations were done by the modelers. While the engine sounds weren't all that loud, hearing the prototype from the same scale distance (several hundred feet), it would be similar. The bells and diesel horns appeared to be louder, as they are in the higher frequencies I imagine.

I have an On30 Broadway Limited steamer with sound, and it is fantastic. With the two big speakers in the tender, it can really be heard. And I use it with plain DC, using one of their "Sidekick" controllers for the whistle and bell. Looks like there will be sound in much of model railroading's future.

I just got my 4-8-2 Mountain from BLI. I ordered it back in October of 2004, well worth the wait. Cool as all get out. I'm saving up for a diesel with sound. You should be well pleased with your BLI loco.

I read that BLI screwed up the paint on this model.
The maroon actually looks purple???!!!
You'll have to let us know for sure.
You would think they could at least get the paint color right!!!?

You'll enjoy that "J", Dave. I have the 1950s version of 611. Yeah, there has been a little debate about the accuracy of the red stripe color and the whistle, but I'm happy with both. My wife and I (who have both had musical training, and my MS thesis project was in acoustics) agree that the whistle sounds like it would at a distance of 1/2 mile or more, and as for the color, it is within the range of photos I have seen, albeit on the dark brown/purple end of the range. The bottom line (as a national contest winning modeler once told me) is that it is going to sit in YOUR display case and be used on YOUR layout for many years; are YOU happy with it? I'm quite happy with mine.

I do not think BLI screwed up the J, at all. The stripe is not the exact color I would paint it. It probably does match what a J had in service somewhere, someday. I would describe it as a bit purple, maybe a bit too brown. Do they have more than one color... I don't know. The whistle is very close. The mechanism is great.
FWIW, this is my sixth or seventh J.
What could have happened.... did.

Dave:

BEWARE - Sound is very addicting[:-,] Once you get one, all you want is sound equipped locos.

That's how it started with me. One little innocent purchase of a BLI E7. I hope your wallet is ready.

I just splurged as well and ordered an Atlas MP15DC in the "Gold Master" series, so it'll come with sound as well.

Should be very interesting.

I'm new to this stuff, so I don't have years of non-sound experience behind me. Saying that, I can't imagine running without sound. You'll love it.

Color rendition varies greatly with the light source. Take it outside on a clear sunny day, again at twilight, and again on a cloudy overcast day. Then look at it under incandescent light and cool white vs. warm white fluorescents.

Sound is great, and very addictive, tis true.

However, QSI sound equipped locos on a DCC layout, especially a Digitraxx DCC layout is the beginning of some "challenges" if you have more than a couple sound equipped locos.

Just so you are aware. The QSI list is somewhat insensed that these current hungry locos mean you'll have to spend more on your DCC system to keep your layout running smoothly with several of these locos on it.

It's sort of QSI's dirty little secret ...

No need to apologize! Anything that gets one excited about the hobby is welcome here in my opinion!

ENJOY

I think my first one will be the PCM Reading T-1. But my father-in-law has 3 already - BLI GG-1, BLI M1, and Atlas Trainmaster. So much fun to run those.

It's addictive as all Heck. My first sound-equipped loco was the BLI Norfolk and Western 'A' 2-6-6-4, and I just went a little crazy from there. Got an under-the-table Soundtraxx steam sound system for my non-sound brass, (I'm DC) and boy, howdy, is that garage of mine NOISY! Great fun, and adds a lot 'character' to the trains.
