HO is 1:87
N is 1:160

So N works out to about 55% of HO size.

However, many things don't scale down exactly right. So if you're trying to convert an HO layout design to N scale, it is recommended to allow between 66% and 75% of the original HO layout dimension.

I was told years ago that to look at an HO layout that's 36" high standing next to it at an average height of 6' would appear as if you were at a height of 250 feet in the real world looking down at a train, and that N scale would be as if you were seeing it from 500 feet.

Pick your favorite box car for example. (real full size one)

it would take 160 N scale boxcars end-to-end to be the same length as the real one.
it would take only 87 HO scale baxcars to be the same length as the real one.
