McHenry coupler compatibility with Kadee?
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, May 30, 2005 5:43 AM
I've noticed most of the freight cars offered by Walthers are advertised as having "McHenry" couplers. Now I'm very familiar with Kadee couplers, but are these McHenry couplers 100% compatible with Kadee couplers and the Kadee delayed magnetic uncouplers?

In a short answer, yes. But, you will get different opnions on which brand is best. I won't argue one way or the other on that, but will say that I have a mixture of McHenry, E_Zmate, accu-mate and Kadee and have not had issues with any of them. I will add too, that as far as the delayed action goes, I can't comment on that end of it. Ken

I seem to remember an article in MRR that looked at the compatibility and indicated that they do work together but do not connect as well on slight curves as a pure Kadee lashup. There are 2 types of McHenry coupler. Some have the plastic filament knuckle spring and are not worth the time of day. I always replace these with Kadee. The other McHenry type has a metal coil knuckle spring and these work fine for me. In fact, there are some applications (IHC and Rivarossi passenger cars) where the McHenry has a drop in replacement and are a good quick conversion from horn hook.

I've used hundreds of Kadee, McHenry, Intermountain, Accumate, Bachmann, and other clones and they are all compatible as far as coupling with each other. Something to avoid, though, are some of the cheaper clone couplers that do not have a knuckle spring.
