I just have a small 3-1/2’ x 7' N scale layout so cleaning my track isn't that big a chore. I've found that Isopropyl Alcohol on Q-tips works just fine for me. (If you get the Q-tips nice and wet with the alcohol, they don't fray like they do when they are dry.)

Which track cleaner to use?? Bright Boy's or old typewriter erasers work great at cleaning oxidation from rails but they leave itty bitty scratches on the rail heads which can become oxidized with no way to remove unless you grind more rail off. Flitz fills these small scratches well. The 'roller' track cleaner that Mike mentioned is put out by Centerline Products, and it uses Handy Wipes and Goo Gone to clean the track. It works! The worst that can be said is that it takes several passes to get all of the built up junk from your wheels and track. Once this is done, things will run a lot better. The new kid on the block (AZTEC) has a similar roller cleaner, wonder where they got the idea?

p.s.: Goo Gone will not harm traction tires nor any other rubber/plastic pieces like alcohol will.

Hey Bigski

I like the sound of your track cleaning car. I have one question. Did you put the smooth or rough side of the masonite down? I just might make a cleaner like this. Less elbow grease and more train running.
