Model railroading during a full moon...
Posted by Anonymous on Tuesday, May 17, 2005 3:42 PM
Seeing as how the moon will soon be getting full, I just thought I'd mention the fact that I can't even go near my layout or work on anything during a full moon...
There are medical professionals out there that will tell you that there's no difference in the way people act and feel whether there's a full moon or not.
Okay. Then why do institutions for the mentally ill report a great increase in problems during a full moon, police departments across the world report an increase in crime, inmates in prisons act up, etc ?.
My ex-wife was the nicest person in the world-except during the full moon...
I personally become very irritable, have problems sleeping and have a loss of consentration and interest in things that I normally like.
I'm not a scientist or doctor, but I personally believe there's an increase in the moon's gravitational field that effects the brain in certain people (like me).

Anybody else have any problems with the full moon ?.

Naw, I just have to shave 10 times a day. But there was that hairy-handed gent who ran amok in Kent...

I wasn't joking about this guys. I'm asking if there's anyone else out there that the full moon effects mentally. I can understand that there are people that wouldn't want to come forward and admit it on a public forum because they wouldn't want to damage their reputation, but for those that are willing, I would greatly appreciate their input.

Hmm--every time I go into my garage to work on the train, the moon becomes full, no matter WHAT time of month it is!

Tom, if you don't crawl under the layout or bend wayyyyy over it you can keep the moon from cracking. [:p]

Trainluvr, I personally have never noticed any behavioral differences in myself or anybody I know (save for the occasional desire to drive headlong over a deserted road without any lights on) when the moon is full, waxing, or waning. It should also be noted that the moon's affect is gravitational, not magnetic. Mind you, our bodies can be extremely sensitive, so lunacy isn't something I'd rule out. First though, I'd consider whether or not you are in the grip of a psychosomatic condition. The effects are real enough, but rather than having a lunar cause, its your own mind monkeying with ya because somewhere in your subconscious the idea that things go wonky with the full moon has taken root.

Say what you will, but I'm not the only one in the world that feels these effects. I never noticed them until I had a head injury back in the early 80s, and ever since then it's bothered me.

I have noticed the effects, but that's all I'm going to admit to.
What could have happened.... did.

I absolutely enjoy a full moon and find it relaxing!

As kids in New York during the early 70s, my sister and I would enjoy looking at the Manhattan skyline under the moon. What a picture that was!

I like the fact that I don't even have to turn on my back light in my house during a full moon since my backyard would be covered in the beautiful milky, white light. It's bright enough that I can sit on my back porch and enjoy my MRR magazine or other good book.

I work on my trains in the evening and whenever there is a full moon, I open my window blinds. Again, to me it's a relaxing scene. Peaceful. I get so much more done in a relaxed mode!

My last Amtrak train trip was at night during a full moon, and the scenery was impressive. Relaxing trip! No mishaps or problems. Train personnel were well mannered and the Silver Star was cruising at 80 m.p.h. Sweet ride!

I never even notice the phase of the moon unless I happen to be outside. As for the ex-wife, there are, of course, biological cycles that run the same timeline as the lunar cycles, so hers may have coincided.

When my better half sounds that alarm, I retire to the railroad room. The fact that she seems to sound it 5 times a month does cause me to scratch my head, though. The earth does only have one moon, right?!?[%-)]

I DO get more irritable, which causes me not to get much done on the railroad. I feel increasingly scambled in the few days leading up to it, and summit is the full moon.

On the night of the full moons, sometimes I go outside and smash up boxes with my metal baseball bat. It helps a little.

I already have extreme anger issues and the stupid lunar thing just makes it worse.
And its NOT psychosomatic condition. I HAVE been like this for years recently (few months ago) realized the peak of my 'anger trips' coniside with the moon. Where do you think my name comes from?

My daughter used to work in the emergency room at North Kansas City hospital. She believes in the "full moon effect" after that experience. Any police officer will tell you it gets crazier about the time of the full moon. In my work I drive to appointments at people's homes and/or businesses regularly. Nighttime traffic during the full moon seems stranger to me with more people driving wierd. However, to this point the full moon hasn't affected my model railroading.

All I can say about a full moon is that it makes for lousy hunting the next day, due mainly to the animals will stay out all night feeding in the moonilight and then bed down more the next day. If the moon can affect the activities of other animals, I don't see why it wouldn't have an affect on humans, too.

Personally, I can't say that the moon's phases have any affect on me.

However, I worked as an orderly in a nursing home for the elderly; and we orderlies often noticed that some patients demonstrated increased agitation during both the full and new moons. Oddly, the nurses and doctors seemed oblivious to this "old wives' tale".

Mind you, with some patients, the effects lasted a bit longer than with others -- about 2 weeks before and after the full moon. [;)]

Full moon is an astronomer's bane. Its light washes out details and contrast in telescope views and in photographic images taken through the scopes. In fact, the effect is noticeable between first and last quarter moon, but full moon is at its worst.

BUT..is is ever breathtaking through a scope, if that's all that's worth seeing!

I work in a grocery store and there is a noticable difference in the customers additude.
There's been days were customers are alittle more edgy than usual and I'll ask one of the girls I work with (they seem to be more intune with full moons-their cycle and all) if it's a full moon and 9 times out of 10 it is. People do act differently during a full moon there's no medical institution that can convince me otherwise.

Agronomy? No really, thats what I thought.

I don't think that anybody that has ever worked with the public doubts that the full moon affects peoples behavior and I am sure the bat thing works. Years ago I used to take an axe and split fire wood. It releaved a lot of frustrations and paid for collage

I've personally never had a problem with the moon (other than it washing out stuff I was trying to view through the telescope)... but my Dad was a police officer for 27 years, and HE sure saw an increase in weird behavior around the full moon...

Granted, things like this may be self-fulfilling. Someone realized it's a full moon, know "what they always say" about full moons, and his behavior changes accordingly...

I seem to remember a study about college students who were given non-alcoholic beer during a party, but not told - they acted about as messed up as if they were drinking alcohol.

Same kind of thing.
