The GE AC4400CW uses Alternating Current traction motors that develop 4,400 HP. The 9-44CW uses Direct Current traction motors that also develop 4,400 HP. The ES40DC has a new engine that meets the new emmisions regulations and developes 4000 HP. Hope that answers your question. I know, on the outside, all these locomotives look the same!
