Athearn RTR vs. latest BB incarnation
Posted by Anonymous on Friday, April 29, 2005 5:15 PM
Does anyone know what the differences are between Athearn's last Blue Box incarnation SD40-2 and the current RTR version? I am assuming that there are drivetrain improvements, but are the shells and plastic handrails similar? The reason I ask is that I already have several old BB and newer BB being "shopped" for high short hoods(N&W) and other appropriate details, and I would like to get some more IF the detail is similar. Thanks.

It is the same locomotive with better paint and installed handrails and truck details. No grabs etc.I personally would buy the newer blue box incarnation.About 30 bucks cheaper if you pay retail.Dan

No problem.I have never seen how Athearn can ask 79.98 for the RTR SD40-2.Same with the GP38-40-2 units at 69.98 a pop.The blue box equivalent has the same drive and plastic handrails. The paint is better on the RTR units though.I have bought the YN3 CSX GP38-40-2 units in RTR form. The printing is excellent but should be lower in price.Athearn is still my locomotive of choice though.Dan

I think the RTR models have the new smaller driveshafts. They must be worth about $20.00 each!

My newer blue box units have the hexed flywheels and shafts like the RTR.I guess it costs 20.00 to put together.Dan

Even at $80 each, I'd buy every one I can get my hands on(warden, er, wife permitting)!
