Having trouble keeping the engine from derailing. Using Atlas code 83 #4 turnouts and 18" min radius.

You need a bigger radius like 24" you cant run 6 wheel trucks on a 18 inch radius

Drew,

Nonsense. I run 4-8-4s, 4-6-6-4s, 6 axle diesels and 85' rolling stock on my 18" and have never had a problem.

I don't have a problem with the 18" either. It just derails going through the turnout. I'm considering relaying them using # 6 or 8 and making sure they're very stright.

I have the Broadway limited 4-4-4-4 running on my layout with 18's. It does OK as long as I dont go through any #4 turnouts at more than a walking speed. I also have the 4-6-4 hudson and it has the same problem at the same turnouts. Of course for the sound that comes out of them I will never give them up!!!!!!!!
PS
None of my Rivarrossi's ever have a problem even at more than legal speeds.

Where are the 6 wheel trucks on a Hudson?
I have no problems with anything thru #6 turnouts, and I have a few #4's in the yards that I can get thru real slow. 2-8-8-2's, 2-6-6-4's, 4-8-4's, 2-8-4's, and 4-8-2's and Trainmasters, and an E8.
What could have happened.... did.

I bought a new BLI J1 in January, and could not...repeat "NOT"...get it to negotiate my 18" radius curves........period. I went to 22" radii and have never looked back. Try 22" if you don't want to go larger.
