Train Show haul!
Posted by rrinker on Sunday, April 10, 2005 1:39 PM
Actually, not much at the train show. I did pick up a 3-car set of Reading hoppers by Accurail, done with numbers different than the regular Accurail releases.
But after the show, we stopped by this new hobby shop that just opened up. It was inventory clearance day, just 10% over invoice! Picked up another 3 pack of hoppers (regualr Accurail ones this time - so 6 new hoppers today) and the steal of a lifetime - an MDC RS-3 undecorated. One of the ones ith the improved Athearn drive in them, not the old MDC drive. Box was marked $50. When my total was rung up, I thought that was for the loco alone - which would have been a darn good deal. But the price was the total for the loco AND the hoppers - I paid significantly less than the price on the loco for the whole thing! Awesome!
Look for my first foray into painting (serious painting, anyway) in the next month or so, when I get around to building this. At least it's a simple, all solid color scheme.

rrinker... Since your website is ReadingeastPenn... I assume that you're from near Reading/Eastern PA. Where's this new hobby shop at and what's it called? I'd love to check them out if they aren't too far away. Was it the East Coast Hobby show that you were at?

No the show I was at was at the Leesport Farmers Market. The shop is also in Leesport, it's called Schuykill Flyer Hobbies. The web site sorta needs work.. http://www.schuylkillflyer.com/index.jsp

I'm in the Allentown area - I usually go to Trains and Lanes in Easton.

Dream on, sucka! [:D][:D]

Actually it's all going on the shelf for now. For one thing, I REALLY have to work on the layout and stop building cars. For another, I need to order stuff - need more Proto2000 wheelsets for the hoppers, I'm all out now. And the RS-3 needs extra detail parts - there's no glass in the cab, it needs markers, and the included horns are wrong for the Reading. So while I am assembling it, I might as well do it right. I gave it a quick test run and back in the box it went.

Way to go, Randy! I really like Accurail kits. I think that at least 75-80% of my rolling stock is Accurail. (Hence, I have a lot of box cars and hoppers.)

If I had the wheelsets, those Accurail hoppers would be together in an hour or less. But, liek I said - need to work on the layout, not build cars.
They are a differetn class than the Stewarts, so while at first glance they look the same (55 ton 2-bay hoppers) they aren't EXACTLY the same. Plus all these have the red Anthracite herald on them - the 6-pack of Stewarts does not, but I have one older single Stewart car that does. The Stwearts have slightly better detailing, but the Accurails are good cars. Maybe a few more and I'll be done. Then I need to up the count of B&O hoppers for my Bituminous traffic.
Then there's always 3 more numbers of Branchline Blueprint Reading box cars...
oops, gotta go check eBay, there was another Reading caboose I was watching.
