Geriatric trains

My sister and I are checking into Nursing Homes for my 87 year old Mother who has been in Assisted Living. Went over to the County Nursing Facility for a tour and to get some information. Guess what is prominently displayed in a living room area for the residents to run? A fairly good sized HO layout. According to the Social Worker, it is very popular with many of the residents. Some like to watch it but others still get to run the trains. It is kept at a level so that wheelchair bound residents can easily see and run it. If my mom ends up there, I will have to see about "helping" out with some scenery and such.

Ray Seneca Lake, Ontario, and Western R.R. (S.L.O.&W.) in HO

We'll get there sooner or later!

Great. That's at least one point in favor of the facility.

Good luck with your search.

It's pretty cool that those old folks got something to work on like that shows that they care about there residents. It's nice to see that they don't let them veg out

Ray--even if your mom doesn't end up there, it might be a nice gesture to 'volunteer' some of your time each week to go over and help out with the layout. You'd be surprised--or maybe not--how much it means to people in rest homes to be around people who take an interest in THEIR interests. It gives them a whole new shot of life.
