The Sad Day we all Fear, has come for me
Posted by canazar on Tuesday, April 5, 2005 11:01 PM
I knew it was coming. I prepared for it. I thought I was ready, but I am not. I do getto build another. It will be Bigger and Better. But, I am still sad that I have to tear up my first layout. We are moveing and I can not put it off any longer. In fact. almost everything is out of the house execpt the layout down stairs.

I started building it after falling with both feet into the hobby back in June of 04'. I did alot and learned alot from it. I will always remember it. I stopped doing major work on it back in late Feb 05' or when I knew we were moveing. No sense wasteing trees, paint and plaster.

The good news is I will be able to save 100% of my track and switches and even almost all of my cork. All fo my trees, structires and bridges will be saved. Even a fair amount of bushes too. I knew someday I woudl have to tear it down so I tried ot build with that in mind. And my lovely fiancee has given me the ENTIRE garage of the new house for the new lay out. In fact, a rough drawing my new track plan is in the photos section.....

Pictures can be seen at the link located in my siginature at the bottom

One I get the new one going, I will post my progress up on the WebShots page. I guess I wanted to share it with you guys, if you care to look, since quite a bit of advice and tips came from the forum. Thanks to all who helped or to those that posted and I benifitted.. And soon hopefully be posting new pictures of the new layout and construction. I am hopeing to have bench work and atleast the main line run by June. We shall see....[8)]

I am now off to tear up abandoned tracks..... [:(]

Best Regards, Big John

Take heart young Jedi..for all is not lost......

...You are in Phoenix, named for the bird that rises from the ashes....and like the Phoenix, your layout shall arise from the remains of it's former self........

Now go forth....and plan anew, learn from the mistakes made before and carry on......

.....may the force be with you....

Let it go man, change is the only constant. Even the masters tear down and start over.

Besides, now you get to dream and plan all over again, personally that's one of my favourite parts!

You can rebuild it, you have the technology.

If it helps, Canazar, I'm working on my third--and it's better than the other two by far. for some strange reason, being forced to tear down a layout just gives you the determination to make the next one a lot better, use the techniques you've learned and plan for those things that you always wanted to do that you couldn't on the other layout. I know it's like saying goodbye to a good friend, but as you said, you're able to save the track and structures, so you're actually taking that good friend along with you, in a way--and look at it this way--you're getting a GARAGE! YEAH! Can't wait to hear how the new one's coming along.
Best,
Tom

I feel your pain!! I knew the day would come too (end of this month) I've built mine freestanding in the garage and it all bolts together. Three trailer loads and it should be shifted.

I'm no where near scenery stages (keep changeing my mind on track layout). So it will be easy??!! I hope. I'm looking forward to building the keeper in a few years.

Don't look at it as an ending, look at it as a chance to start over and correct the mistakes of the past layout. My last layout got removed from the basement when we sold our 1st house. Now 10 years later I am finally getting a new layout started. I am trying to correct all the mistakes on the last layout. (No more steel track!!) But with two teenagers running me around I didn't get much done this winter, but there is always the summer and next winter!

Before you tear it down, take a gazillion pictures and even some video.

I've got a 14-year-old daughter. 14 years ago, we had a little baby, then a toddler, a pre-schooler, a little kid, a tween, and now our teenager. Changes are part of life, so we have to embrace them. There's no Rewind button. Keep the pictures around for inspiration, and think of the things you can do better.

Look ahead, Friend, and be happy. Nothing in your future is more clear to you than your intent to build a whole new layout, but this time with the benefit of the experience you now have, plus that of all of your firends here. We can chat online as you come across issues that you'd like us to help you with...if you'd care to.

I swore, in my marathon project over the past three months, to never build another layout. Now that I'm just puttering with it, I can see possibilities of a move in the future, a desire to improve it substantially, and maybe even boredom forcing me to eat my words.

It should be fun, and more than one of us envies you your opportunity!

Good luck on the move.

LOL Yup did all that in 7 months of work. First month or two of our lease and the last 3 I did not do any work to it. The second will go a lot faster as now I have all the track and switches. First time around I had to buy as I saved my nickels.

Thanks Everyone! Wow, great words. When I built this one, I knew in the back of my head that it was goigto get get torn down. Which, in a way helped alot because if I had a tough time decideing, I always rationalized, "The hell with it, its gone soon" And I try it, what ever it was. I also knew it was my very first. Heck, it wasnt even until 5 months into it before I had a chance to see someone's elses lay out. I knew I would learn alot as I went.

And yes, I cant wait for the next one. In fact, I all ready have shelves and cabinets hung up for storage. Just saveng my pennies so I can buy what I need to finish my bench work and do it better than the 2x4's and 2 year old bleached particalboard that I used for the first one .

Again thanks for the words of encouragement. Keep ya posted on the new one.

Warmest Regards
John K

I will start a new album to show this one taking off. And yes, I hear you about the pictures. I have LOTS and LOTS of them. The ones posted are just the better ones I had. Thanks for the

Sounds to me as if you've got the world by the "grommet" - lots of space for your railroad and a supportive woman by your side. Hey - it doesn't get much better than this![tup][;)]

About 4 years ago I tore down (and that's what I did) an HO layout that was constructed within a room built especially for it. All the track, wiring, rolling stock, loco's and other operating stuff got boxed up. The rest went out with the trash ...... this was a good sized layout in a room 22 ft by 10 ft.

Two years ago, a friend of mine rekindled the "flame," and I built the layout and trainroom shown:

This is a great hobby - enjoy![tup][:D]

Canazar; That was a great looking layout. I'm sorry that it will have to go. The one bright side is that the new one will let you use those skills that built that one to do an even better one. I'm on number 11 myself not including make overs.
