I had believed that the new train in town that runs past my front door was a small line that only ran from the Homer City Power Plan to a local coal mine. However, with a little looking around, I found that it was a bigger line than I thought. It is the Buffalo & Pittsburgh and runs throughout Western PA and Western NY. It seems to be a subsiderary of the Genesee & Wyoming, Inc.

They are a Geep Line:

Not bad colors, eh? Almost makes me want to model what runs outside my door.

That wouldn't be a bad idea...you would not have to travel far to do research. You could also back date it if you run steam.

I went to an online store and I realized I couldn't tell one Geep from another. What is this one?

spacemouse- Sounds like you have the info on the line, they are great looking units. Another spotting feature of Dash 2s is a small oval window on the left side of the long hood, its a water site glass, just like a throwback to the steam days.
It sure would be a good line to model, and good pics too!

I've been looking around and the only two manufacturers to make a GP38-2 are Athearn and Proto 2000. Now I like the Proto 2000, but the Althern comes in at 1/3 the price--but I know nothing about them. $114 to $37.05

Those are GP38s, not dash 2s. The only dash 2's they have are in the 9000 number series. G&W uses alot of GP38s and GP40s (some of which have been rebuilt to GP40-3s). The St. Lawrence and Atlantic, another G&W company is a favorite of mine. The best model of the GP38 would be Atlas, and in fact they did a B&P unit. The nice thing about G&W is that the roads also share power frequently, so you could have a B&P, SLR , G&W, W&P, or any of the roads mixed together. The system is a big user of LLPX lease units also.

I beleive it is a GP-38, possible GP-38-2. Viewing from the left side it is difficult to tell a GP-38 from a phase 1 GP-38-2. The right side long hood has an oval sight glass for the dash 2. Later phases of the dash 2s have lower slotted vents on the battery boxes along w/ anticlimber and vertical grills at the radiator. I have seen this paint scheme on a model, can't remember if it was done by Atlas, P2K or Athearn.

There is one in the display case at Hobby Express in Mars. They also have one in G&W, same paint scheme.

I have the Atlas B&P GP-38. It's a GREAT GREAT locomotive. Smooth as butter.

According to the roster at www.geocities.com/gwirailfan, Buffalo & Pittsburgh 2003 is a GP38AC originally built for the L&N. B&P has 3 other GP38's: 1 from the B&O (2000), and two more GP38AC's from L&N (2001, 2002). The March 2005 issue of Railpace Newsmagazine backs up 2003's identity as a GP38.

Atlas recently made models of B&P 2000 (item #9168) and G&W 51 (item #9169) in the attractive GWI orange paint scheme.

Yes. They're both subsideraries of Genesee and Wyoming.

I didn't notice that the map would not expand. Click on the link and check out the logos in the lower right.
