Bonus check?..what bonus check?
Posted by cwclark on Friday, March 18, 2005 12:33 PM
Hi guys,
Ever get a bonus check from your employer and spend it all within a week on MRR stuff?
so far i've purchased enough details west stuff to do 10 locomotives, kadee #5 coupler s to do about 80 cars, microscale decals to do ten cars and 6 engines, enough SP paint to do all the rolling stock in the Englewood yard (before the UP take over)..one EMD SDMAC70, one Alco PA-1 A/B/A (that's three huh?) and an Alco RS-11, 20 pairs of Barber S-2 70 ton trucks and a new air compressor for my airbrush...I think my wife is gonna have something to say when the credit card bill gets here...so much for the down payment on the Minnie Winnie class c motor home i was also looking at....Chuck

My only complaint about my current employer is that they are stingy on bonus checks. It would take me about 10 minutes to spend what one of our bonus checks would be, and that would not be in the Brass webpage.

On the bright side, lay down the law. You earned the bonus, you should enjoy it. And after you tell her that, drop me a line. We have a spare bedroom you can use for a while.

Like my father always said it's Bone A** check, not bonus. Our spare bedroom is over 1500 miles away so I guess I can't help on that front.

It was a bonus check that got me back into the hobby. After 15 years of service with a former employer, I was presented a certificate printed off a PC and a $150 bonus check. I figured that at $10 per year, I was a really valued employee!

It would have been really easy to have just used it to buy groceries, but I decided that I would spend the check on something frivolous that I would otherwise not purchase. So I got an Atlas HO scale trainset 5 years ago, and have never looked back.

I have gained some bonus checks in my time usually in the 4 figures. If ye are gonna bonus your employees go 4 figures or spend it on something useful to them.

In this day and age, bonus checks are not common. What little they do get can easily be made up with 20 hours of work.

If I've had a good fortnight and have fixed mrs Smith's washing machine properly I usually get a 3 or 4 figure bonus.

This year so far (our financial year is nearly at the end) I've had over 10 grand in bonus cheques!! Not bad!!

Heck, I once got a five figure bonus check and spent it before I got home. Ah, the good old days.
What could have happened.... did.

I cut my big toe off with a lawnmore at work and workmans comp paid me a few thousand dollars and i blew it all at the hobby shop. And the good thing about it is when the check came the LHS was having a big sell.

I think that at the end of the staff meeting when the boss asks, "any one got any bones to pick?"

My employer, Alcoa Extrusion Products, pays us roughly $30 a month in safety bonuses and quarterly profit sharing bonuses that run around $750-$1K.
If you start to see the money as an entitlement it ceases to be a bonus.
I consider it a bonus; an extra; and have no problem pouring it into railroad equipment. [:D]
Another bonus I realize from working a 4X4 schedule (four 12 hour shifts with four days off) is two full weeks a month to work on the layout.
