Which one? Spectrum makes an HO one, and now BLI is coming out with one too.

Trainworld says they have the Bachmann J's in stock. Try them, or start digging through Ebay.

Define cheap. I just looked on eBay and there are several, including one brass. Just look up Norfolk and Western and then scan the Bachmann stuff. I would advise you to get a Spectrum version - more accurate and runs far, far better. I got one from Trainworld for $99 and I thought that was good.
*** Oops. I take it all back. There is one Plus version with a Spectrum auxiliary tender on eBay at present, that's all. Someone has cornered the market. Keep looking and jump on a "Buy It Now" if it's reasonable.
What could have happened.... did.

I'm hoping someone can help me with a sitcheation I'm having.

I'm looking for an HO scale J class #611 and I wonder which is the best one out there for my $$.  I would really like it if it were DCC equipped and possibly with a flywheel on the motor.  After some research, I'm not sure which one is the best one that I could get.  I understand that Bachmann Spectrum has one, as well as BLI.  Also, if it would come sound equipped that would be a bonus, or how difficult is it to add sound later if it does not come sound equipped?

Thanks

Where the heck am I supposed to find one of those?  I looked on BLIs website and they are all out of stock.  I looked into it and they seem far superior than Bachmann's.  Hmmmmm.....

Possibly trainworld.com.

It appears that they have some here: http://www.toytrainheaven.com/.sc/ms/cat/HO%20Locos%20Steam%20Broadway%20Ltd--N&W%20Class%20J

I have two BLI J's and they are by far superior to the Bachmann. Both of mine are sound and DCC equipped and have served me well.

As for where to find one....try  ebay!

The Train Station in Columbus, Oh., www.trainstationohio.com has the BLI #612 listed in inventory. Not cheap though.

I was looking at one that does not come sound equipped (but I believe is still DCC equipped) how difficult is it to add sound later?  How does that work?  Any idea of cost?

Thanks

What is the minimum radii of this loco?  I have one from Bachmann (not the spectrum model) and it will take my 22" with ease.  However, I just receieved one from BLI today and am farily satisfied with it, given it does have some problems that need to be worked out or that I need further understanding on.  When coming from a straight into a curve (the 22") either the front trucks derail, the trailing trucks derail, or both.  Also, it tends to stall on the curves.  When it does move it emits a grinding noise (like when an electric motor is being put under strain and will not move) as well as emitting a popping noise (which I know isn't good).  Any thougts?  I've looked in my manual/troubleshooting guide that came with it and couldn't find anywhere where it says what might be the problem, nor did I see anything in regards to the mimimum radii.

Thanks.

Radii causes the same problem in the real world. While turning 611 and 765 in Portsmouth, OH, the N&W had a slight problem. 765 traversed the wye with no problem. However, when it was 611's turn, it stalled just as it started into the sharpest portion of the wye. They had a T-6 back down the wye and "assist" 611 around the west leg of the wye. I was observing with Tom Dressler and just "happened" to get some photos.

SO, widen the gauge, or ease the curve, or keep a diesel nearby to "assist".

I advize you DON'T buy a Spectrum J! Some run really well, while many don't run at all. I know many of them woulnd not negotiate even the widest curves without derailing, come to find out the attatching fixtures for the front and rear trucks were reversed. ALSO, note the overall design & dimensions of the Spectrum, as opposed to BLI: The boiler dimensions, skyline casing, and that odd "bulge" on side skirting is all WRONG on the Spectrum model. The BLI version is much more accurate, runs better, and has SOUND! Just email me and I'll hook you right up!
