Just add water: My New Trestle Bridge
Posted by Fergmiester on Monday, March 7, 2005 10:56 AM
Just thought I'd share my latest creation. I built the bridge using the drawings from Kalmbach's book on bridges. All I have to do is add water, marina, buoys and boats.

Regards

Fergie

Fergie--don't know what I like best--that super trestle, the ex-Clinchefield 4-6-6-4, the neat logo or the rest of what I can see of the layout. REALLY good work!! Cheers to you!

Beautiful! Just Beautiful!

I envy your craftsmanship, but what I envy most is the amount of space you have for your layout!

Thanks for posting your pics.

The trusses were made in August (three in an evening), the deck last month (about 3 days) and the final assembly.... drum roll please[^]

The past three days,

Though I don't think my wife is to happy about me getting home and pouring into it.[:-^]

Nice job, Fergie! That really becomes a center spot for any layout!

I'm presently working on a small Suncoast "craftsman" coaling tower. (Didn't realize what I was getting into.) It's only 4" tall but it's turning into quite the project. You have to do much extrapulation from the drawings. The directions are only a modicum of help. (They're more a help in what order to do things than really much of anything else.) Maybe when (if?) I get done with it, I'll be able to post some pictures.

Anyway, keep up the good work!...

Nice work!
Really considering a lot of it was done on a rocking boat!

Golly What A Gully!!! [^]

What staining or finish did you use for the wood?

Is this a bay or a lake? What are you going to use for water? What boats, etc do you intend to install?

Tell your other half not to get uptight - at least she knows where you are, and you can't get ino too much trouble.!! [:-^]

Fergie:

Nice job!! Did this in nine days??!? Wow!! The trestle I'm working on ( had to redo ALL the bents...) is only 21 scale feet high ( about 1/3 of yours) and I'm into my second month of work. Course, the family takes away some time....and the job....but it'll get done.
A excellent piece of craftsmanship. Post more pics!!

The turntable is homemade. There are more pics of it in my Railimages file. I still have to work on the bearing wheels. That will be my next big project, which is about 9 or 10 on the to do list.

BTW the reason the Misses was upset was because I got up at 7 on a Sunday and shook the house with my morning routine. I aint known for my quietness[:I]

I plan on staining it with India ink with gloss black streaking.

Thanks for the Kudos guys

I had John (Der5997) over tonight and we both agreed the Bridge needs another set of stringers and cross braces along the bottom.

I'm hoping to get this section finished by the time I go back to sea.

Fergie, with a beaut like that, shouldn't you use the real thing to stain it: creosote? That way, you'll get a little whiff of real railroad, but it won't be overpowering in that room if it is the only croesoting you do.

I have some lying around, and I intend to use a bit at a time until either I can smell it or the wife points me outdoors.

The thought crossed my mind but.... Creosote is one of those nasties that should be kept outside. As I get older I'm finding I have less tolerance to VOC's. Creosote also being a known carcinagen. Realizing their are issues with thresholds, tolerances and variables I get enough exposure to this stuff at work let alone at home. I realize this is in trace amounts but.... I think , like you, the real issue would be my better half's tolerances.

NICE. Right out of the CO Midland, right near the Hagerman tunnel. Any oil based stain will soak in except where there is glue. A touch shiny black over the the brown should give it that 'Creosote' look.

True enough about creosote best left outdoors. The larger lettering on my gallon says, "For outdoor use only."

I would not stain, say, the pony wall 2X4's under my layout; that would be a headache, and trouble, in more ways than one. I would, however, like just the barest whiff...you know? So, I was thinking a few of my bents.......

Hafta think some more about that.
