I went to the Long Beah show.... the best part of the whole show was the Disney story put on by the president of the Carrolwood Pacific society (Walt's Live Steam that he had at his house).

The reviews on here from anyone that is more of a serious modeller that went to the shows in NJ and MO were not exactly glowing. I went to the St. Louis show and was v. dissapointed with the manufacturer turn out. The Walthers booth was empty, except for a table, forms and a box for a drawing. Anyway, I hope that you enjoy it. It is really a show aimed at families rather than existing hobbiests.

I was one of the NJ attendees, and indeed it wasn't too exciting from a serious Modeler's point of view (it certainly was no swap me, although quite frankly we don't seem to get too many of those around here either).

HOWEVER, for it's target audience (which I think is families with kids who may/are interested in railroads and models, and need a little incentive to become more involved), it was perfectly suited, with serveral large operating layouts (module upon module) in the most common scales (N, HO, O - and oddly S?), plus a ride-on train (which the kids loved), Thomas playsets for the wee ones, and some hands on layouts with (Bachmann) command control (alas, sans instructions). Maybe not what I was looking for, although interesting, but certainly important in spreading the word (and I was hearing attendances of 40,000 or so people per show - that helps).

Concerning Caboose Hobbies... two words: shopping carts. It's a hobby shop with shopping carts! That illustrates how big it is. If memory serves me, the building used to be a grocery store. If you need detail parts, you'll find manufacturers you've never heard of. You'll think you died and went to hobby shop heaven.

Have fun!

The STORE, over on S. Broadway, not too far.

They didn't "do" booths when I was there.

I went today. Somewhat disappointing I thought. While it was fun to talk to the reps from Soundtraxx, Digitrax and Lenz it is targeted to the Mom/Dad and kids crowds. There is certainly nothing wrong with that however because the hobby always needs new people.

The layouts where very well done.

Bergie is right about Caboose Hobbies. Living in Denver I am so spoiled to have them here. The employees are always top notch and always do thier best to explain stuff. I have found that I have to focus on the one or two things that I am there to get. I go straight to them get them and head out to pay. Otherwise I would go broke everytime I go there.
