Another DCC Decoder Install (link to pics)
Posted by rrinker on Thursday, February 10, 2005 8:15 PM
Out of the three locos my father in law decided to convert to DCC first, I now have 2 1/2 finished. The half is because I have to get to the LHS and get some canopy cement or something that won't craze the light bars in his Atlas/Kato RSD-4, as they have to be cut back to allow separate front and rear lights, and shortening them is going to wipe out the tab that currently holds them in place. But I have the track power and motor leads attached and it runs.
My digital camera is a not very good, rather old one, but I snapped pictures along the way for all three locos so far. The P2K SW-9 with an NCE SW9-SR decoder came out pretty fuzzy, but the P2K SD7 with a TCS T1 came out nice, so that's the one I uploaded to my Webshots gallery: http://community.webshots.com/scripts/editPhotos.fcgi?action=viewall&albumID=271252792

Note that this is an older P2K model, but it DID have a DCC socket. I promptly ignored this - you CAN plug a decoder in and not change the light bulbs, they will be powered via one of the two large resistors on the board. The second resistor is not connected to anything. I cannot figure out what the point it, but once side of it connects to the function common (blue wire, Pin 7) and the other end is soldered to a hole with no traces leading away from it on either side. Anyway, if you DO just plug in a decoder, the lights are VERY dim. So I decided to ditch the board, put in some Golden White LEDs, and just hardwire it.
The pictures of the RSD-4 are coming out ok, so once I fini***hat one I will upload them. If anyone wants, I will create a new gallery for the SW9, even though the pictures are a bit fuzzy. You can still make out what's going on, I think.

Randy;

Regular white glue (Elmer's or similar) is good for holding the light bars.

I tried to look at your pics, but the site is loaded with pop-ups.

It's Webshots, a reputable free picture hosting service. Perhaps you need a popup blocker, or to use Firefox. I don;t have popups viewing people's Webshots photos using either IE or Firefox, but I do have the Google Toolbar and its popup blocker loaded in IE.

In fact, I will GUARANTEE it is your computer with some spyware - I just tested it with IE and it didn't even trigger the popup blocker. You should run Spybot and/or Ad-Aware, soon.

I have Spybot and also the Yahoo popup blocker. I shouldn't be calling them popups, but when I click the link here in the forum, it takes me to your page with the three pics, then when I click a pic on your page, I get ads from webshots instead of the pics.

I just tried it again-turns out it was just loading very slow. I got the header for the Webshots site with the links to log on, etc, but the rest of the page was blank. Now I have it. Thanks,
Tim

Same thing happened to me, I click on the photo thumbnail and all I get is an ad.

SilverSpike,
It loads very slow. Not a bit at a time, but once it's ready, the whole pic shows up. Give it 30 seconds or so.

It's free, what can I say? If either Verizon or the cable company would get off their collective behinds and offer some decent internet services here, I wouldn't have this problem, I'd just host it on my own server.

rrinker,
By no means was I criticizing you or the site. It's fine. I just wanted to let others know they need to be a little patient. I applaude you and anyone else that takes the time to show us your work, tips, etc.[bow]

I'm not mad about people pointing out the deficiencies of the site (the original link in my first message is wrong, anyway, that's my editing page for it, not the public viewing link), I'm mad at the lousy excuses for 'services' we have around here, because with proper services I wouldn't HAVE these problems. And to think, the name of the cable company actually has "Service" in their name...
