Is there an online sound sample of the QSI-equipped P2K GP9?
Posted by Anonymous on Saturday, February 5, 2005 7:00 AM
I am seriouslt thinking about buying a LifeLike P2K GP9 with the QSI sound system. But before I hand over my money, I'd like to hear an online "sound bite". I couldn't find any at the LifeLike website, I found nothing on the posts [here] over the last 60 days.

Can anybody point me to a website that has a sound sample of this model exactly? I already know what a Soundtraxx 1stGen EMD sounds like (very convincing, I must say...) but it is not QSI.

Well I did NOT find an online sound sample, but I heard one on the test track and...
I was NOT impressed. Maybe I'm spoiled, since I chased and recorded dozens of 1st-gen Geeps and F7s on the B&O in the early 1970's, and I know too well what an EMD 567B prime mover sounds like in Notch 8 under heavy load. The QSI / P2K engine only sounds like a fast idle to me.

The moral of the story is: Always LISTEN before you buy!

BTW, I am not saying there is anything wrong with the workmanship or quality of the LifeLike GP9. It's just "not for me."

I am waiting for my P2K E6 A/B locos to arrive at my LHS.
Does the E6 suffer from the same problem? I'm not real concerned with an exact reproduction of
the prototype sound... I just want it to sound good. Have you heard it? Dave

I'll just get Soundtraxx decoders and install them, I already know what they sound like...and I believe I can select the type of horn (Nathan, Leslie, 3-chime, 5-chime, etc..)

I have a P2K GP9 with QSI sound. It sounds good, and the bell is very good. The problem is that it sounds like a 'low key' SD40-2! There is a soft turbocharger whine when it notches out. I was expecting to hear that drumming increase('567 chant'). It is not too bad, but I think QSI needs to do a little more research.

I heard one at my LHS last night and to me I was impressed espeacially the fact that as you ease up the power on the throttle the sound actually incrases before it moves just like a real loco going notch to notch.I'm not an expert on early geep sounds but for what it's worth it sounds just like the old CN gmd1's which frequent the yard in my hometown and its definatly got a non turbo 567. I've gone ahead and ordered a CN green from the LHS he only had CP in stock. This will be my first sound loco but I'm hooked. Rob

Excellent info, thanx, swedtrain![8D]
In a nutshell, what I gathered from the reviews on both links is that Soundtraxx is farther along on mimicking the diesel exhaust and the horn sounds. In fact, as I was listening to a test-track demo of the P2K geep, my reaction was: "It sounds exactly the same as the early [1993] Soundtraxx 1st-gen EMD did 12 years ago!" So, eventually QSI will be making sound chips comparable to what Soundtraxx makes today. Which means....I either have to wait a few more years or install the Sountraxx chips/speakers myself.
