red over black or black over red

I'm trying to paint a CN diesel in the red-orange and black with sargent stripes scheme.  I have decals for the stripes.  Is it better to start with red, mask it and then apply the black; or can I start with black, mask it, and thenm applie the red?  Will use Scalecoat 2 paint for the red-orange.  BTW with the demsie of Scalecoat what can I use as thinner instead of their product?

Spraying Red over Black may affect the shade of Red, making it appear  darker than you want.

Spray the Red first, then the Black.

I learned a few years ago that stores that mix custom colors for you actually add some deep Red  to the Black .

I can't help you with the thinner question, I have never used that paint.

Rust...... It's a good thing !

Lighter first, then darker.

So, red before black.

I've used Xylene to thin Scalecoat 1 and 2. Regular lacquer thinner doesn't 'cut' it.

I bought mine (one quart) at Home Depot but they may not sell it any more.

[edit] Matbe they do still have it.

Yes, dark over light to cover up.
