The rule was to keep a "clean stack", at least in populated areas (there are hardly any not populated areas in my country). The trick was to frequently clean the flues with a shovel full of sand in the firebox, keeping an evenly burning fire and a careful handling of the blower. I have to admit that it didn´t always work.
