Storage boxes
Posted by NVSRR on Monday, April 10, 2023 1:09 PM

I have a couple brass engines 5at need a box. Looked on the usual bay and found only one that wanted 70 bucks for a small box.   So. Is there other places to find the ?

Shane,

I would have suggested Reboxx but they are, sadly, out of business now.  IIRC, Brasstrains.com is selling boxes for purchase in various sizes.  It's the same ones that they outfit their used brass with when the original outer box is not salvagable.

I buy my individual car storage boxes from a company called Uline. I'm not sure if they do business in the US but that really doesn't matter. There are lots of box suppliers in the market who offer a huge variety of sizes at very reasonable prices, and they also sell a variety of packing materials from simple tissue paper to foam blocks that you can cut to fit. Many suppliers also offer a variety of carrying cases as well.

This is one supplier that might meet your needs:

Dave,

Uline is in the US and does offer boxes in a large variety of sizes.  My impression is that Shane was looking for individual boxes with foam inserts for his brass locomotives rather than plain storage boxes.

The boxes from Brass Trains Dot Com work very well.

Hi Tom,

Uline does sell foam packing in sheets which can be cut to shape, or there is this type where all you have to do is remove the cubes to create the desired space:

https://www.uline.ca/Product/Detail/S-14642/Foam/Pick-and-Pack-Foam-Sheets-24-x-24-x-1?pricode=YH015&utm_source=Bing&utm_medium=pla&utm_term=S-14642&utm_campaign=Cushioning%2B%2F%2BFoam&utm_source=Bing&utm_medium=pla&utm_term=S-14642&utm_campaign=Cushioning%2B%2F%2BFoam&msclkid=958e3a3a69fb19403a1d5e0e8393f920

I think that the Uline systems would be fine for personal storage, but if you want an original spec box for resale purposes they might not be up to muster. Here are the Brass Trains boxes:

https://brasstrains.com/Classic/Departments/Replacement-Packaging/BrassTrains-Replacement-Boxes/35?showsold=True&department=27

Cheers!!

U-Line is a great choice for ordering boxes. It is the foam-core that will be hard to find and when you do find it...... well.... you think our models are priced gouged - wait till you see what they want for foam!

Heres a few tips:

1. U-Line is USA available.

2. You will need to start an account (kinda like commercials - not needed). However, a freind/business who has an account already will keep you from giving out personal - not needed info if they will buy them for you.

3. Check out the 'Business Card' boxes in the 'Gift box' section. These are the sturdy, assembled boxes youll want.

4. I model HO scale and need boxes for new kits to sell. The best sizes I have found that closely match what, say Athearn used, as a 'Blue Box' size are the following....

Part No. (qty)       Size       Notes

S10707 (50)           3.5x7x2*     For 40' cars and small locos.

S10708 (20)           8.5x11x2*     For steam locos, three of a kind.

S16331 (50)           3.5x12x2*     For passenger cars, 50' cars.

* All sizes are in inches.

 5. Boxes come in a nice white finish, ready for your own labeling or labels.

For one or two boxes, foam insert can be found on the bay for a rather pricey expense for what it is. And may be worth it, i cant see it. Anything of size (ie: 4'x8' sheets), even ordered factory direct, will cost you a gold bar or three!

Good luck!

PMR

PS: River City Railroad on the bay sells MDC boxes (new even!), but they are MDC, or Roundhouse - whichever. While the boxes are cheap - shipping varies due to varrying postal prices - source: RCR.

Uline's home is here in SE. WI.  They are HUGE!  They have/are building million sq. ft. warehouses all over SE. WI.

They do not have a retail/counter sales.  Everything must be ordered.  You can get a catalog and look for yourself.

At work we order shipping boxes from Uline and, as mentioned, they come in a wide variety of sizes and shapes.  And it's good quality cardboard.  They are also VERY quick with shipping and the items arrive in a short amount of time.

U-Line is great. I ordered my tubes to store strip wood and plastic from them.

Now I receive a giant catalogue about every four months. We used to buy from U-Line at work, but I had no idea how much stuff they sold.

There is all kinds of stuff that would be handy in the train room.
