How about some purple freight cars?
Posted by Morpar on Saturday, September 17, 2022 5:19 PM

I am in the planning and basement prep stages of building a layout, and I am slowly but surely getting my wife involved. She loves the color purple, and as a result we have a new BLI ACL SW7 waiting for us at home. So now that I have her a purple locomotive I need to try and come up with purple and/or pink freight cars. Obviously I can freelance something, but any suggestions on more prototypical stuff out there?

Good Luck, Morpar

If you Google image purple freight cars and/or purple shipping containers I bet some ideas will come forth.Cowboy

Having Her-in Doors on board can’t be too bad a thing, as long, of course, as she doesn’t take complete control!!Whistling

Staying prototypical, Atlantic Coast Lines does spring to mind, I see there is a Morning Sun book, “Atlantic Coast Line Color Guide to Freight and Passenger Equipment”, though how many of their ordinary freight cars were painted purple, or had purple in the paint scheme is a moot point.

However, if you don’t mind a completely unprototypical paint scheme, feel free to be inspired QuestionQuestion by my PB Double O 7/16 box car. A fellow club member’s response to any query around paint schemes around the Club was “paint it pink with purple polka dots”. I called his bluff, and did so.

Even a lowly scrap gon can be pretty in pink:

More pink:

Maybe Powder-puff Blue?

These hoppers started out in pink but faded pretty quickly to an off-white:

I thought CENTRAL OF GEORGIA had some purple freight cars with silver ovals.

My quick search did not find them... am I imagining this?

My understanding was that they were a black car with aluminum oval:

And they were easy prey for LIONS.

No, you not imagining it, Kevin.

The question is, did such a car actually exist?

Edit: If I was a betting man, I'd be putting my money on the negative.

It may not be prototypical, but it seems close enough for her! And I recall there was a Paint Shop article WAY back on how to model these CofG cars too, so decals may still be available. Will have to do a little more looking around.

I have a purplr covered hopper.  It is for a private company hauling plastic pelets.    Could always make a fleet of private owners cars.

No, you not imagining it, Kevin.

Thank Bear!

That was bothering me. I knew I had seen the car in purple somewhere.

That is the one I am remembering.

Detroit Toledo & Ironton had some hi-cube boxcars in a shade of purple.

A couple of manufacturers have made express reefer cars in a sort of wine-red/purple lettered for Chateau Martin wines:

ACL had some express reefers in the passenger paint scheme:

I don't have a Charger, and my Challenger is yellow! I almost went with Plum Crazy, but it wasn't available on a Shaker when I ordered the car.

Bath & Hammondsport had "wine" colored boxcars.

Wisconsin & Southern did a cancer awareness boxcar in pink.

Models have been produced of both.

My late wife also loved purple. As a result, we had a very nice ACL passenger train on my CB&Q layout. Anacronistic, yes, but I sure wish I still had reason to keep it on the layout.

I might still have most of the cars, though I think the locos are gone now. If you're interested, PM me (if you can. If not, post here).

I asked my wife and she is definitely interested. I wasn't able to figure out how to PM you, but my email is morpar55@hotmail.com. Now I have to start looking for a locomotive....
