Nothing railroad-y about Truman?
On August 25, 1950, in anticipation of a crippling strike by railroad workers, President Harry S. Truman issues an executive order putting America’s railroads under the control of the U.S. Army, as of August 27, at 4:00 pm.

Not nearly as often as FDR, of course.

I tell my grandkids that I'm not as old as dirt but I did plant the first tree. It really shocked them a couple summers ago when I took a drink from the garden hose. They had to run and tell Nana.
Pete.
Pete,
But did you feed the hose into the ground after you were done with the water still running??? That's something probably EVERY kid in FL has done at least once in his or her lifetime - LOL! Course I never did.

Time...It marches on...without ever turning around to see if anyone is even keeping in step.
Forgot I didn't put in my condition, my doctor is anoyed on the good side. At almost 70 I can still do construction though my tollerance for heat has gone down and I can't go on a long hike without water or other beverage (no beer dose not count). I generally walk about 25 miles a week and 3 years ago went on a 12 mile hike with parts that were at a 45degree angle. I was motivated to get in better shape when I saw my mother go down hill, remember that every time I say I don't need that long hike.

Tom.
I was planting some stuff in the garden. So yes I did shove the hose in the ground. I believe it was a Japanese maple in red but a dwarf. Nana likes them. The thing had a million of the helicopter seeds the year after and last year I picked out about a dozen seedlings. I'm curious to see how many survived the winter.
They would be great for a garden railroad.
I was one of every kid in Florida who did that on more than one occasion. Now I live in a place where a pick ax, a mattock, and two shovels are needed just to put up a fence post or plant flowers!

MRRing is one of those hobbies that takes both Time and Money. And when you have kids you have neither. It's why I dropped off the map for a few years.
But...I just incorporated my love of the hobby with my 9 year old son as he is now old enough to enjoy it and play with it responsibly.I would guess that is why people in the 20's ->40's drop out.

Ahhhhh...A kindred spirit! - LOL! Did you turn off the water and get the hose stuck in the ground??? Another thing I never did in my parent's yard...or my next-door neighbor's yard.
Yea, I'm now reside in an area (clay) where the above would never work.

And space!
I have found that as I have gotten older, the house seems bigger, and suddenly there is enough room for a layout.

Kevin,
I was one of those. Had the whole second floor of our little Cape house. Then the boomerang returned with two little ones. Now all I get is the little shop 8 x 10. Next time I'm changing the locks and not answering the door.
I'd be much more interested in knowing under what sign everyone was conceived.
I think my sign was CLARKY'S BAR AND GRILL.

Guess that's why this 36 year old is still doing trains - I have no kids.

'71 model- same year as Amtrak, the Nixon years, of which I have no memory (although my father held me up to see Jimmy Carter inaugurated, and for some reason, what I remember of the event is how burly Gerald Ford was in his top coat).
George VII? Although I suppose Charles is a rather inauspicious regal name, for various reasons.
The great thing about being born in the 1970s is the consciousness of improvement in most things; the grocery stores of my youth would seem Soviet today. But the model railroading in those days- that caught my attention. I can still remember the school librarian bringing me a copy of Model Railroader, saying, "you might like this." It was the May, 1976 issue- John Olson's Mule Shoes Meadows. What a find! Forty-four years later, and I still love the same kind of modeling.

Trainman440 The votes are in! Here are the results after around 50 voters: Its clear the 60+ range dominates the forum, followed by 20-30s. Its surprisingly how few people in the 30-60 range are, I expected more there. Personally as someone in the 20-30 age range, I mostly spend my time posting and viewing my model railroading posts on newer sites like Instagram, Youtube, and etc. so personally Im not surprised at how few of us are on this forum site. Still, the results are pretty interesting. Thanks for everyone who voted! Charles

Ignore the percentages, focus only on the shaded bar.
A last option was for those who didnt want to enter their age but just wanted to see the results. that was to ensure no one entered in a false vote if they didnt want to participate. These votes accounted for the remaining percentages.

Thanks for doing the poll Charles, I enjoy them.
If you are up to doing another poll sometime, how about
How long is your mainline?
How many feet of track are on your layout?
How many turnouts are on your layout?
Type and or brand of control system.
How old is your current layout?
How many steam locos?
How many diesel locos?
How many electric locos?
Is your layout portable, movable, or built-in until the wrecking ball comes in?
How many passenger cars... box cars.... you get the drift.
Maybe you could do a weekly poll, I have no idea how much work is involved, so maybe not.
I bet others have some poll ideas as well. Whatever the question, doesn't matter.
