Start a new conversation function
Posted by Medina1128 on Wednesday, February 2, 2022 5:57 AM

This morning, I tried to send a message to another user. When I clicked on the "Start a new conversation", instead of a dialog window, I got a plain white box with ever-expanding borders. I tried clearing the cookies and cache, but, no change. Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the "I can't create a new MR anymore" club, Marlon!  This seems to be the latest trend in the present set of forum software glitches.  There is no fix other than the promised upgrade that has yet to be seen.

The software is old and glitchy.  We may never see an update/upgrade.

Marlon, what I have been doing with some of the regulars I chat with privately is go over to Big Blue and chat. I still enjoy this place but it is in a slow death spiral towards impact.Laugh Big Blue is where I'll be when the plug gets pulled here.

Another workaround (I have had problems with PMs here for donkey's years) is to openly post here for your target member to PM you.  If he/she responds in the affirmative, go look, and you 'should' see a new conversation in red font. It may not work, but it's worth a shot.  In which case, you simply click and you should be able to communicate.  Worked for me.

The problem is only distantly related to the forum. YOUR problem is your BROWSER.

Browser standards have become so much higher that older protocols have been shut off. If you can roll back to Firefox 50. or so, your problem would resolve itself.

Use Microsoft Edge for your normal browsing and get a copy of Firefox 53 or earlier, SHUT OFF automatic updates, and you will have a stable platform that can handle older protocols. Firefox does have a download page where you can grab older editions, but you will have to fight your way through their websites to find it.

Herre, I have done the work for you. (Google is your friend)

Marlon, this just seems to be the latest in a series of mishaps to befall the forum and its software. For over a year, I could not send or receive PM's and then suddenly the PM feature reappeared for me. Then, just a few weeks later, what has happened to you has happened to me.

So, now, if I can find an old PM that I sent to or received from someone, I send a new message on that old PM. My prediction is that there will never be another software upgrade on this forum.

After reading the To Renew or Not To Renew thread just moments ago, and in particular Steven Otte's comments, I am becoming increasingly concerned that this forum is on its death bed.

Brent, your post, as accurate as it may be, depresses me. A once great forum in its death throes?
