I run my HO 2-8-8-2 mallet on 22". I will leave it up to the pro's to advise if you can run it on 18.LUBRICATION-SPARINGLY, hob-e-lube for the side rods at your hobby shop. For the plastic gears, I use white lithium marine grease found at your sporting goods store. This grease will not attack plastic and is heat resistant.As an alternative, I could use, super- lube, a multi-purpose lubricant with teflon made by SYNCO, also available at your hobby shop.
