Why is It So Hard to Find Kato USA SP Daylight Articulated Chair Cars?
Posted by WILSON BILLINGSLEY on Thursday, June 13, 2019 10:05 PM

Why is it so hard to find Kato USA SP Morning Daylight articulated two-unit chair cars anywhere? I easily found the 10-car base set (106-062) on Amazon while I could still find it, yet it seems that the add-on articulated chair car (106-6309) is still elusive. I've searched train shows where the 10-car base set and the GS-4 model (126-0307) were still available (and both of which I have), even this year when I went to that train show at the Cobb Galleria Centre held every March. No matter where I've gone, though, I still can't find the two-unit articulated car set, of which I need four examples to complete my Daylight train. Why does it seem that the articulated chair car set was especially sold in limited quantities even though both the locomotive and the base car set can still be found somewhere? I can't find the articulated chair car on the Internet either. Is there still any good source on the Internet or anywhere in the Atlanta area where I might be able to find it?

Nothing new, your in the same boat as those looking for Amtrak equipment, in HO scale.

Check every on line store and retailer you can think of, and then some.  Watch Ebay, and check out sites like HOSwap in Groups.io, although I think most of the listings are for HO scale.

I just did a Google search, and there does seem to be a shop in Japan that has it.

I know nothing about this shop, it's just the only place from the search I did that seems to have one.

Good luck.

Mike.

Hey Wilson-

Based on the sheer number of tags you've attached to your post, I'm assuming you're able to search the internet of things as well as anyone else here, and I'm sorry to hear you've come up dry.

I've bought some Kato stuff from hobby shops in Japan with perfectly good success. It might take 3 or 4 weeks for delivery, but everything arrived well-packed. Good luck on your hunt. I'll keep an eye out for your stuff as well, and if I run across the cars I'll pass the info along.

Robert

PS to Mike (insewi)  I think the OP is looking for N scale, not HO.

Yes, I know,  when I did the Google search, that's what came up was an N scale set.

I was referring to the hard time some have finding passenger equipment in HO scale, as well.  Smile, Wink & Grin

Hey Mike-

Just a little good-natured ribbing . . . Whistling

N-scalers spend a lot of time searching for stuff, even common generic stuff, and when we can't find anything we just call that Tuesday. But when an HO guy can't find stuff, we can't help feeling a little schadenfreude.

Good luck with the Amtrak equipment.

Robert

I had to look that up!  Laugh

Amtrak viewliners seems to be as extinct as the OP's articulated!

I also checked eBay. I didn't see any articulated coaches for sale. The only thing I saw was the 10 car set.

Much to the disbelief of many that ask such questions, there is no "secret hidden internet source" for all things model railroading that are hard to find,  only accessible by a certain few members of selected forums.

You just have to do what we all do, keep looking.

The site's dead. I clicked on it and it gives me the "This site can't be reached" error message. I'll try ebay, though. Thanks anyways.

You might have to kitbash them yourself.  I had to do that for my SP ¾ Dome Lounge Cars.  I model HO scale but I’m sure it can be done in N scale.

You could always buy the 10 car sets and the decales from amazon and sell off the cars you don't need, there is a way but very expencive.

There are quite a few on eBay now, all pre-owned like new.  A bit pricy.

Could I suggest a limited market and a limited number of models built....After all, a Northern and a ten car train is HUGE by model railroad standards. Not many people outside of club members have room for such a beast. (IF the club allows SP passenger trains - some clubs limit the equipment allowed to be operated to certain prototypes for authenticity purposes. If the club models the Reading-CNJ-LV around Allentown then the chance of a Daylight showing up in real life is probably less than nil). And you want to make the train even bigger (in multiples of two, no less)...Don't forget the expression "selective compression" - not many people can model full size prototype. You can see Kato gauging the market and building only a limited number. of articulated sets thinking most people will be more than satisfied with a 10 car set. After all, I like BA&P's boxcabs and could probably use a couple, but only Suydam has built them in my lifetime (one run back in the early Sixties) and I'm 68. There just isn't the demand. https://brasstrains.com/Classic/Product/Detail/066163/HO-Brass-Model-Train-Suydam-BA-P-Butte-Anaconda-Pacific-Box-Cab-Electric-Custom
