After WWII until 1989 Germany was split into West and East Germany.
In 1949 the two (west and east) allied controlled german railsystems were given back to the german staates.

In West Germany the DB (Deutsche Bundesbahn) was founded. In East Germany the system was named DR (Deutsche Reichsbahn)

Both systems were owned by the states (federal railways).

With the reunion in 1989, also the reunion of the two systems starts.

In 1994 the systems were joint together as DBAG (Deutsche Bahn AG) now a incorporated company - Most stocks owned, at the moment, by the state.

And the DBAG will be also called DB, also the new Logo on the locos and cars show only DB.

The DB are also some more companies like DB CARGO or RAILION for the freighttrains.
