You reminded me that my new loco terminal has tracks that end in nothing and that there is a real possibility that I could end up with a disaster similar to what many have discribed here. So I added a low retaining wall in the form of a piece of wood to prevent it from happening.

Back in the early 80s, the layout at my parents' house was a 4x20-foot table.  Dad had laid the track right on the plywood surface.  In doing so, the double-track main ran right along the long edges of the table.  The problem with that was that my younger brother felt that the trains (some at the time were his, too) should be run at one speed:  full throttle.  Somehow the trains always stayed on the layout except for one afternoon when a freight train headed by my yellow-box Atlas UP SD24 came screaming around the curve on my side of the layout.  As the train was almost to hitting the straight track down the long side of the layout, the locomotive decided to leave the rails, arcing into the air on its right side and down onto the carpetted floor below.  Amazingly, it survived in one piece and still runs on my current layout.

Of course, my brother still thinks trains need to be run fast.  The last time he and his family visited, he kept speeding up the trains on my layout, refusing to slow them, to the point that I ended up pulling the plug and refused to run them for the remainder of their visit.

I mentioned early in this thread I had been there done that. It was SD9 #346 which fell from the layout to the floor. Pieces went everywhere. I purchased repair Proto 2000 repair parts to get it running again. One of its steps still ahs some damge, but I run it anyhow. .... The brodken step is next to the boxcar in this photo. 

To prevent anymore such accidents, my facia is high enough to be a fence protecting trains on tracks at the edge of the layout...... Here is an example with a Great Northern E7 at the edge of the layout. 

 

Now that I posted the photo, I see a handrail needing a repair.... There is always something to do.
