The short answer is that Maytag was the final major stockholder (after a series of transfers and attempted re-starts) after RI shutdown in 1980. The longer story: http://www.simpson.edu/mjdomo.archives/rits/msg07167.html (also read the messages up and down the thread) Maytag HAS sued to protect their RI trademarks - a few years ago, a want-to-be RR company THOUGHT that they would start up a "new" Rock Island RR in Missouri - Maytag lawyers quickly brought THAT to a stop ! Operationally, of course, the Iowa Interstate RR is the true "heir" to the RIL, running as they do on the old RI main track from Chicago to Rock Island and across Iowa.
