I'm a private person. I don't do social media, just several railroad forums. My monikers are all Railroad job symbols I worked regularly and was associated with, and more recently a branchline I worked on for ten years. Back when I started, I was still an active railroad employee, and there was a lot of paranoia associated with internet forums and news groups, so....now, why change?

Yup....that is what our front yard looks like! They are friendly except for nit pickers.

My cat is somewhat older and won't harm a flea, but the two pugs will destroy any nitpickers (oh wait, did I say nitpickers? I means plush toys and treats). Laugh

My moniker reflects my job for the last 27 of my 50 year working life, routing and scaling trucks for a major roofing manufacturer.  Standing on concrete for long hours has blessed me with PAD and CHF; side issues are COPD and A-Fib, plus knees that are about worn out.  But it was mostly fun, and hardly ever dull.  Just wish I still had the energy to work on a model railroad.

I can appreciate where you're coming from Howard. I am a people person. I enjoy people, talking to people and getting to know them by name.

Growing up on a resort, that was very important. Calling customers by name was a given. Getting to know them, getting to know what they were about and what their interests were wasn't hard to do.  The next year our customers always came back because of this.

This how resorters create repeat business. You just be personable. It wasn't facade it wasn't phony, that's just what you do in the hospitality business and have fun doing it.

I am known as Track Fiddler here. It is the name I chose. I could tell you my name is Jeff when my name really is Paul, then Jeff would still be just the same as Track Fiddler.

A more common name feels more comfortable, more personable. Just because members on this Forum have a common name doesn't mean that's their real name.

People are who they are by their inner self, their words, their kindness, and their mannerisms.

We can have any name given to us in the book but that doesn't change who we really are.

Best Wishes

                      Track Fiddler

Gidday Howard, I’ve been known as “Bear” all my adult working life. There are people I’ve worked with for long periods who would be at a loss if you asked after me using the name on my birth certificate, and, in fact in one company the only person who knew my real name was the pay lady! I got technical directives from the airline I contracted to, marked “Attn Bear”.

As “Bear” was not available on this forum, I added the Ja as the New Zealand Government Railway 4-8-2 Ja class is my favourite locomotive. I also use it on the other forum that puts up with me.

I have used my first name on the forum when offering my condolences to passed members, and while it would be assessed on an individual basis, would probably reply to a PM.

You’re right about privacy, or the lack of it on the interweb, but have noticed that the email scams are getting more sophisticated, so I tend to keep my personal details to a minimum.

Me, paranoid?? Nah! Oops - Sign, I need to straighten my tin foil hat!!!

Cheers, the Bear.Smile

I use NP for the same reason. It has started feeling awkward as I am beginning to know some of the members and communicating with people for long periods of time ... especially those who have chosen to use their real names ... but this forum is publically viewable without a signin ... so I worry about this.

My handle used to be my real name, but then I changed it.

My real name, that is. The handle has been the same since day one on this forum.

I have changed my handle on some other forums (to my new real name), but haven't bothered on this one yet.

As far as privacy and all that - if someone wants to get to you, they will. Remaining anonymous by using a fake name will give anyone who is really looking for you maybe five minutes delay in finding you - at the most.

That would be great.  But as mentioned, there are plenty of people with bad intent on the internet who could use what you post against you.  Although it doesn't take much effort for a computer savvy person to get what they want - many people feel more comfortable at least "keeping the doors locked" so to speak.

Well, part of my name is in my username...

ricktrains4824 - My name is Ricky.

Those on here who know me, know my full name.

Those who don't know me, won't get my full name from on here.

Nothing wrong with "Safety First", especially on a railroad related site. Wink

Enzo is my stage name.  It is also what everyone calls me, even my wife.  It is not what is on my ID card.  MY first name is DOuglas, but no one calls me that other than doctors or other office places.  "Enzoamps" is a business enterprise:   guitar amplifiers.  In any group, when someone finds out my given name is Douglas, they then want to start calling me that.  Hey, it isn't my name any longer

If someone is out to get you personally, they will find you.  But putting your real name on the internet also makes it available for web surfers just looking for available names.  People here in my old folks home object to being called Bob or Doris in the doctor waiting room.  But they do that on purpose.  If they called for Mr.Smith or Mr.Jones, then ill meaning people nearby know more about you.  They can learn your doctor appointment schedule and rob your house while you are out.  The internet is full of ill meaning people.

If you prefer to use your given name, then fine, do so.  But it is unfair to tag someone who doesn't as "hiding something" or somehow being dishonest.  And for some people, it is a lot easier to type "T2" than it is "Arnold Schwarzenegger".

Southgate is the name of my fictitious endustrial area, in  HO scale and 1/24-5. I just like how it sounds. But I usually try to sigh most of my replies with my first name. Dan.

I'm not too keen on people I don't actually know being all up in my personal business. Now some people are like Forrest Gump and will tell their life story to pretty much everyone who crosses their path. If that's you, more power to ya. But that ain't me and I gotta be me, man.

As far as I'm concerned, people can be known by whatever name, nickname or moniker they choose.
My screen name is based on a nickname I acquired at work, (and probably the only one of several that would be permissible on this site).  I sign with my real name because that's who I am.
I suppose that my only issue with some screen names is their lengthiness when one wishes to address a reply to them by-name - this can be solved by quoting them, if I wish to respond to a particular person's comments where many others are also offering replies.

I spent 30 years in the Canadian Armed Forces.  Much of that time, early on, was in the Combat Arms (Infantry, Artillery, Armour, and Combat Engineers).  In my case, I was in Armour.  The tank corps are deemed to be the experts and gate-keepers for radio comms.  This is because we can't shout between tanks without making our presence known to those opposite, and because shouting between the snaps and roars of passing ammunition of various calibers doesn't seem like a good use of time.

We were required to use 'veiled speech' techniques so that our enemy couldn't discern easily what we comprised as a force, and what our intentions were. So, instead of saying tanks, or the armour function, we would use the term "Ironside".  Everyone knows what ironside means, including our determined listeners opposite.  What they couldn't deduce is what the compositoin of 'ironside' was to which they were eavesdropping.  Were we just an attached troop of four tanks, an entire squadron, a regiment, a Battle Group, a Division? Maybe just a patrol of two reconnaissance (recce for short) vehicles, recce being part of the armoured corps' duties?  BTW, the artillery is 'shelldrake, and the infantry nearby are to be called 'foxtrot.'  To mention your commander, regardless of rank or appointment, you merely call him/her 'sunray' when using the radio.  Sunray can be a Master Corporal section commander in the infantry all the way up to the commanding general.  So, to the enemy listening, they can't really tell about whom you are referring to, but your comrades in arms know because they have the context.

Anyway, to keep this short, I learned the value of being discrete and of being circumspect over those 30 years.   When you are open about yourself, some, a few, listening might be looking for an advantage that you'll not know was taken until it's too late. Facebook is nothing short of a commercial data miner that owns your information. Photo sites own it as well, and can delete all your information at will, or store it in a location to which you will never be granted access (AKA 'theirs, fo' evuh.')

My Samsung Gear wearable teck, a watch, records what I do in the way of sleep, activity, texting, my heart function every 5 minutes, receiving emails...and it's stored for the purposes of those who offer the 'free' app. It's an intrusion I can live with.

The monikers are cuteness. Just ask your most significant other. We look cute playing with our toys.

Lets not take ourselves to seriously.
