Thanks, Ken! This is the first article I have ever had in a major magazine. I have had many articles in local NMRA newsletters (not exactly the same thing...... ) and have given a lot of clinics though. As for being clean shaven for a change.... I actually like it. I do believe I look younger and it was time I did something different. People shouldn't be stuck in a rut all the time, do something crazy now and then so they will know you still are around..... Good work with the sugar! Hope it keeps in the normal range and doesn't decide to get too low on you.
Today is call the dentist again day.... (To see what they want me to do about the VERY temporary crown), and then clean house! Should get out and glean the garden for vegies, and get ready to do some canning of string beans tomorrow when the Granddaughters are here.

Actually there have a been a few who didn't recognize me so far. A guy I taught with at School who ended up being the AV specialist for several yearsl, I saw at the bank and looked at me like, Who ARE you? He finally figured it out.... Grandaughters haven't seen me yet. They will be showing up here tomorrow a few minutes after 7AM for me to watch while their Mom goes to a meeting at school where she teaches. The cats weren't sure yesterday. They didn't want me to cuddle them like usual and kept their heads pulled away when i piucked them up. This afternoon I was holding Blackie and he finally decided to wash my cheek..... They have decided it is OK I guess. Talked with a couple who live on the side street next to my property, and they pretended not to notice at first. Both of them finally said I look considerably younger now. I guess that may be a good thing, ya know?
Called the dentist and finally talked to the dentist herself. Asked her if I would be doing any damage by not getting the Temporary Crown put back in again. She said as long as I have no pain and am OK with the tooth being missing, it should be not a problem. She also said she will let me know as soon as the crown comes in and will try to find a time to get it put in early.

I'm supposed to start my road trip Friday morning, but we might be in the remnants of Harvey, now a tropical storm. Weather permitting, I'll make a quick trip to MI to get my wife who road up there with family after the eclipse.

Front I knew I was off to a bad start when I knocked over my big cup and lost 2/3 of my ice. Small freg at work and holds only one ice tray and takes 5 hours to make ice. Things went down hill quickly after that!
First customer was a 91 year old woman. Poor thing's lights where on, but no one was home. Could not keep a darn thing straight, even the sizes of the mattress she has. Picked a speical order mattress that onces you pick it, you own it! She would not lay down on the floor model, just sat on it. Told me to order, so I started writting a ticket. Then she said "I will pay for it if I like it". Hum, that is not how it works. She offred to give me a deposit But I knew this would be a forever sale. I could have taken a 60% deposit and order the mattress. But, I knew it was the wrong mattress for her back problem. Plus the deposit was none refundable. So I voided the ticket and told her to have a nice day.
And that was the good part of the day!

I'm up very early for me as we were supposed to be heading off for 'birding and breakfast' but my wife has a problem with a tear in the cornea of one of her eyes so we will be off the the eye doc as soon as he is open. I was looking
Yesterday it hit 88F here which is far over the normal high of 72. We have been enjoying a very warm late summer but it is supposed to end next week. We'll enjoy it while we can but sure could use some rain. The leaves have started to turn on the old elm tree so I guess fall is around the corner.
Ray, congrats on the magazine article! I haven't recieved my copy yet but am looking forward to it.

Not much new here. We had some painting done on the house last week. The west wall was badly faded and was starting to peel. My wife said I wasn't allowed to get on a ladder and I can't say I objected much as the whole wall needed sanding. The other 3 walls were just fine. In fact the back wall was last painted 17 years ago. Even though it faces south the eaves are about 4' wide so very little sun gets on that wall. Our house 'faces' the back yard and was designed so that no sun would get inside during summer. It is a low bungalow.

Well, my layout is taken apart and removed from the train room. It's stored in the bike room next to the garage. All the trains and structures are wrapped up and put away in large boxes, which will migrate down to the garage over the next couple of days.
I would like to hope that it will rise again, but, who knows?

I ordered some more materials by mail order again by Walthers. It's easier when you have no money in the account. So no time I will begin building construction on my small layout in 3 weeks.
Ray: Look forward to seeing your article. It may be a while before the MR is delivered, as our local post office is closed because of Harvey; all mail service to 778xx is temporarily interupted.
Had a four day weekend and did absolutely nothing with trains. Had over 30 inches of rain at the house, backyard is a lake. I kept expecting water to come in through the back door, but it didn't. Was prepared to dig a trench in the mud if worse came to worse. By the time the ground is dry enough to mow, grass will be a foot high...
Ft. Worth is a good place to bring the diner. Besides the stockyards, there is world famous Tower 55; where I spent many hours of my young adulthood watching and shooting train pictures.

Charlie Sparkie is doing as well as we can hope with him being blind and deaf. (still think the stuff my wife watches on TV caused it!) Still seems happy and a very loving dog! With the speical food he needs I now Call Him The Money Pit! Cost $10.00 a week where the Irish Wolfhounds food cost $35.00 a month? Sparkie weights in at 17 pounds, Wolfhounds 180 pounds? He is worth every penny, but seems odd to me?

Haven't dropped in for a while. I have been staying busy with lots of little carpentry projects this summer. Working on some deck repairs right now. Our little area of NE Saskatchewan is literally burning up this summer. The Granite Lake forest fire which is about 40 miles away has consumed 2,500 sq. mi's of forest since starting by a lightening strike around the first of July. Lots of smoke and falling ash on days the wind is from the northwest. They have had to close the highway between here and Prince Albert because the fire has crossed the highway.
Ken, bless you for helping along the 91 yr old women. It has to be hard dealing with someone who has less than a full load.
CN Charlie, hope our smoke is not getting that far south.

Jim, we had some smoke smell in the air today but it is from a large fire in northern Manitoba so unlikely it is from the fire near you. Hope your summer is going well despite the fires.
I had some good news today. I went for my 6 months check with the urologist and my PSA was zero! I have to get checked every 6 months for the next 7 years but I can live with that.
Mr. B, sorry to hear about the layout. When we were planning on moving to Victoria, it would have been into a condo so had plans to do either a switching shelf layout in HO or a door layout in N scale. In fact I built the N scale layout with that move in mind as the whole thing could be largely ready to ship by using another door on top with the layout inside like a sandwich. If you can't re-build your old layout hopefully you could do something. No layout wasn't an option for me.

Mr. B .... Sorry to hear about your layout being torn down. Actually, I know how you feel. I had to dismantle my 1900 era layout, and it was painfull to do that. It is hard to believe it was almost 30 years ago when that happended. It was a long time before I started what is now my current layout. .... I would encourage you to stay active with model trains becasue this hobby is fun even if you don't have an active layout.

The weather guessers apparently are correct about the remants of Harvey passing through this area. Some light rain has already arrived. Tonight, heavy rain is expected, and we me have a total of 5 to 8 inches of rain by the end of tomorrow.
I'm planning to leave in the morning for my road trip, but I may revise plans if weather is bad. I'm going to Michigan where Shelley is already with family. My birthday is Sunday, and our anniversary is Tuesday. After that we head to Cincinnati on our way home becasue our daughter in law there has a birhday Thursday. ... It will be another busy trip without much computer time. ....
Today, I take my truck to the repair shop. They will repair my damaged fender over the week I am gone. I have Shelley's car ready for the trip.
Hobby Front: My quest for trying to find a paint to match the old Floquil Burlington Northern Green, I think, is finally done. From a railroad site that I was referred to, I found a mix for BN Green. The three colors of Model Master paint for the mix have been ordered and then I will see if I like the color. (The non-mix solution that I knew about is from a line I can't find and additionally it is a gloss. Over large areas, I am not very good when it comes to brush painting flat finishes. And as I have said multiple times, Montana is doesn't allow for spray painting for a good chunk of the year, by either being too hot or too cold.)
The hopper car project is close to being finished. Unfortunately, one of the decals decided to misbehave and I couldn't get it to behave. I have a replacement on order but it won't be here until the middle of next week. Should be a quick enough job so that I can get the decalling finished. I want to try to get the weathering finished too so that I can finally get it finished and take it home to the layout.

Yeah, that's a little over the top, but anyway, keep believing and it will happen. I haven't had a layout in over 40 years, but I still have all my rolling stock and structures in hopes of someday.
Well, this is our last day in Hamburg. According to plan, the next stop is Ft. Worth. I seem to remember that MR or maybe it was Trains did an article on railroading in Galveston some years back. That's another town that's seen its share of hurricanes.
Prayers for all of the folks in and around Houston. They have a tough row to hoe ahead.

I was bad last night. Woke up at 1:00 AM and I was hungry so I was bad. Made some Natco's. Woke up with a 167 blood suger reading but it was kind of by design. Waking up at 1:00 AM was not part of the plan. I need to get some yardwork done and I feel like doing things when my blood surger is a little high. At 2:00 PM I was at 149 and felt like doing stuff!
Wife and Face Book Friends. Wife is a Peter Noon fan and meet one on Faces Book that lives close by meet her for the first time. Sue said she hoped to be home around 3:00 PM. 3:00 came and went. So I called the Police! Told them where she said she would be at 4:45 PM. She called at 5:00 PM and told me I lost track of time. Told her I need to call the police to let them know she was all right. She said "You better be kidding me!" Lets see, 2 hours over due, meet the person on Face Book and your cell phone is turned off? No I am Not Kidding!

One time when my parents still lived in Houston I called one weekend and could not get a hold of them, also their answering machine would not pick up. So on day 2 I called the cops to do a welfare check and hey found nothing at the house and none of the neighbors had seen them. So I called my brother who lived and hour north of them to advise him of what was going on. My brother never answers the phone so I left a message. They called back about 20 mins later " oh they are here and styaed the night with us. "
