what kind of wire would you use? Did Marklin make the wire?

Thanks, Dave

Dave,

which Marklin catenary system are we talking about?

Marklin used to make a tinplate-type catenary system using stamped metal "wires", loosely resembling German type catenary.

With the introduction of the new C-Gleis track in the 1990´s Marklin also put a new and much more prototypical catenary system into the market, for which they off a variety of different lengths "wires".

IIRC, Marklin´s and Viessmann´s systems are identical.

In any case, if you plan to use the Marklin system, stay with Marklin´s "wires"!

Of course, there is still Sommerfeldt, a much more realistic system, available in many different styles, following either German, Austrian, Swiss, Italian, Belgian etc - prototypes, which are distinctly different!

Sommerfeldt is something like the BMW or Mercedes among the catenary systems, but rather expensive and extremely complicated to install.

I used the old stamped metal marklin catenary on a couple of layouts and then switched to a North American trolley wire design for my last layout. It wasn’t prototypical but I liked the fine look.

David,

There are at least three types of Marklin track and the catenary masts are different for each type.  Metal M track, K track and the newer C track. I would suggest getting your hands on a Marklin catalog to see the different track styles and appropriate catenary for each.

Ulrich: send me a PM if you want more info on my old Marklin layout.
