WPF for the New Year's weekend
Posted by hon30critter on Friday, December 30, 2016 2:21 AM

Happy New Year everybody!! I hope you all have great things planned to bring in the New Year!

Here is my second attempt at applying and weathering wood planks to the Walthers 90' turntable bridge:

I'm still working on the grease and oil drips that would be deposited on the floor of the pit under the bridge when the bridge is set to the incoming track. I hope to have something to show by the end of the weekend but our New Year's celebrations may interfere with that.

Let's see the "good stuff" folks!

Cheers to everybody!

Dave

That turntable looks great!

I'm just getting back into model railroading after a long hiatus and a couple false starts.  Been working on benchwork for the layout and a set of Tichy wreck train car kits (N scale).

I'm not entirely satisfied with the paint but just getting the tiny things together has been an accomplishment...

Happy New Year!

New Year's greetings to all! Wherever you are, I hope the coming year will be full of promise, good will, and trains...lots of trains. And I hope each of us has the time needed away from w#%k to accomplish your model railroading goalsBig Smile

Dave, That TT is looking great!

Matthew, Great to see another new face here! And even better to see someone working in N by building those neat little kits.

RDGCasey, That greenery radiates real warmth here in the chilly Midwest.

Another very modest contribution, given I was out of town most of the last week (see http://cs.trains.com/mrr/f/13/t/260290.aspx ). We did see some trains...

Saw a great example of an old Ford panel delivery at the C&O Heritage Center if you really like to weather and rust your models...

A friend brought his new UP turbine and some other pieces along to spend an afternoon experimenting shooting photos on the layout and testing out a new camera.

Eastbound turbine crossing the diamonds at Lafayette Junction.

The same train, this time displaying proper signals, passing beneath US24.

A Union Pacific weed spraying train, at Tree Farm Road.

As I'd pretty much expected, all of the usable still shots we got came from my older Canon DSLR, but I was surprised that what little video we took looked better when shot on the new Sony point-n-shoot.

Since he'd bought the "museum quality" turbine, we had fun playing with the sound effects. I most enjoyed the noises it made when going over switches and crossovers.

Good stuff here already.  Well since I wasn't here for the Christmas one- I got four more Scaletrains.com Tank cars, so I can run the first Wheeling and Lake Erie LPG train over their recently rebuilt Clairton Branch.  10 cars plus a buffer, although now I can't run the average size (40 cars), or the longest one yet (72 cars over a four lane highway!)

I also got three new locomotives that are being repainted in to the wheeling projects I always do.  Shown here is what will become WE 107, a heritage unit for the AC&Y.  I'm planning to paint the shell today and let it sit for a day or so then gloss coat it.  I also got another Kato SD40-2 to do as a tiger unit- probably 6311, and a bachman to model their ex-KCS units.

(My Model Railroad, My Rules)

These are the opinions of an under 35 , from the east end of, and modeling, the same section of the Wheeling and Lake Erie railway.  As well as a freelanced road (Austinville and Dynamite City railroad).

RDG Casey - Terrific scene.

I finally cleaned off what was left of the HO layout:

Put down track for most of my small yard. Looking east:

I'm looking forward to more of everyone's photo's.

This week, I finished two F&C HOn30 gondola cars for Boothbay Railway Village. Sandy River & Rangley Lakes RR 406 and 412. On SRRL, gondolas were flatcars with side boards added.

Our signal guru also completed a set of signals for the reversing loop most of which is in a tunnel.

WHats happening is:

The triple signal on the left controls the crossover between the main lines and the entrance into the reversing loop (tunnel entrance). The top signal is red because the crossover is set to the cross track instead of the main. The middle signal is red because the turnout to the reversing loop is set to the reverse loop instead of the right side main line. The bottom signal is yellow because of the caboose at the tunnel entrance occupies the 2nd block ahead. The double signal on the right is red over red because the turnout ahead is set to allow trains to cross, and the main line is blocked by that.

A short video of the MFM HO club in Trois-Rivieres Quebec. This small portion of the layout is almost completed. Remains fences, a bus stop shelter and pedestrians to add.

Everybody .... There are some great photos this weekend .... Keep up the good work.

The Christmas season with visits to family members has kept me away from he layout. Today however, I got back to it. I'm running the Empire Builder as it operated on the CB&Q between Chocago and St. Paul. Burlington E-units hauled the train on that portion of its trip. First, a prototype photo.

Next.... Three shots a 9 car version of the train on my railroad.

Excellent contributions here, Fellows!

I spent much of the week getting the layout and basement ready for visitors and an operating session that took place last night.

Prior to that I worked on finishing up more carpet squares:

Sure is nice to have "wall-to-wall carpeting, especially when crawling around under the benchwork!

Happy New Year, everyone!

Another great start to WPF.

Happy New Year to everyone!

NYC Niagara #6008 at the head of a fast 'mail and express' negotiates the wide curve at the west end of the BRVRR layout.

Keep the photos and ideas coming everyone. Thanks to you WPF is always the best thread of the week.

Dave,  Thanks for getting the WPF ball rolling.  Looks like your dirty work is paying off.

Completing a scratch project can be a fun way to wind down the old year.

Thanks to all and a Happy Model Railroading New Year!  Regards, Peter

Good afternoon from cloudy and cold Northeast Ohio!

Dave:  That turntable and pit are coming along nicely, looks prototypical!

Matt:  Good start on those Tichy Kits, they are a lot of work but bring great results.

Casey:  Nice Picture, love your steamers!

Mike (IL): Thanks for dropping in, I doubt that truck looked like that in service.

Fritz:  Nice pictures, the weed spraying train is unique!

Jimmy: Another good kitbash on that GP35 High Hood.

Mike (CO): Good start on rebuilding your layout.

George: Good loads, and signal seem to make the layout come alive.

Garry:  Nice photos of the Empire Builder, it is one of those classic trains that have gone away.

Ed:  That sure is a colorful floor, I may have to look into that for my basement.

Allan: I always like mail and express trains, they are the money makers for the prototype in passenger service.

Peter: That is a really neat looking structure.

Better late than never, I finished up a couple of cars today!

Intermountain PS1 Boxcar Kit, substituted A-Line metal sill steps for the plastic ones in the kit, painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and lettered with Mask Island Decals.  Original car was built in 1964 and modeled in its as delivered paint scheme.

This is an Intermountain PS1 Boxcar Kit, used the moderinzation parts with the short ladders and walkover platform, A-Line Sill Steps, painted with Scalecoat II Boxcar Red and lettered with Oddballs Decals.  The original car was built in the 50's and modernized in 1977 removing the roofwalk along with the other changes. This is why it has a COTS label and ACI plate attached.

Thanks for looking!

Happy New Year, all.  I haven't posted anything for quite a while and am just trying to get back in the swing of things.  These pictures are from my new Don's Dream World (USA) layout.

I agree, sometimes when we are running in the summer when BRV is open, I just follow the trains just to see the signals working. Cool

After a few years of construction, I've finally started on the scenery of my layout.

I've just finished painting the first coat on the ties for Camp A. I'm aiming for an effect of weathered creosote.

My approach is to paint a first layer of light grey, then go over it with dark grey and dab the latter off with a paper towel. This results in the effect seen in the close-up, which is a couple of sidings I did to work out the technique.

tbdanny:

I like the ties. You have obviously gone to a lot of effort to paint and weather each one.

I also like your backdrop now that I can see it all in one picture. The close up shots that you posted previously didn't do it justice.

Long weekend for me, I get to go back to work tomorrow.

I picked up some 3 brass log cars last year on Ebay for $35.00. Today I got around to painting and weathering.

The old Climax pulls the hill with the newly arrived log cars.

To My eyes..it appears there are two different kinds....Or is it My eyes? I'm really not a rivet counter...just curious. LOL

Blind men see much better when viewing a pictureLaugh

I noticed awhile ago when I was tweaking the bottom picture (adding some backgroundBang Head)  I grabbed the wrong trucks out of the parts box, these are for some SP hi side gons from the 60's. Funny how your distracted when watching tv while painting side frames, even had my "good" glasses on. Good eye!

Making headway on this model I'm working on with my 9 yr old son - his idea.  He'd like to open the real thing someday.  (We'll see.)  But this will eventually go on our layout in progress.

Mike, The new layout is looking great!

George, The extra-narrowgauge cars are equally as appealing as Mike's, but very distinct.

Jack, Still much to do, but an impressive start.

Garry, Love your big sky!

Ed, I'm getting really jealous of your carpet, although due to the quart of water or so we get inside in very heavy rains I need a mat solution to the walking on concrete problem.

Allan, I can see those passengers inside nursing hangovers and many happy holiday memories as they speed back to a new year's first w*%k week.

Peter, Awesome!

Rick, To be sure the Ford wasn't that rusty in service. The C&O had too much classDinner Nice cars!

Dagne, Hello and beautiful workSmile

tbdanny, I have to agree, the backdrop is looking much better as a whole. Give it time, if it needs something more, what you've done up to now will eventually reveal what the finishing touches are. Almost 20 years later, my backdrop still hasn't demanded I do anything moreWink

Geared Steam, Nice work on the skeletons.

Dave, The pit is looking great...and reminding me I have 3 pits that all need a bit more something.

MapGuy, I'lll join in GARRY's welcome.

It's really great to see some new faces in WPF. Looking forward to what else you may be up to, along with the great stuff from the usual group that hangs out here.
