Source of walkway & grate material for HO diesel walkways?
Posted by nyoandw on Sunday, November 20, 2016 3:54 PM

Hi, I have searched the site and forum - I figure this topic must be covered but I can't find it.  I am upgrading an old out of production HO diesel that came with  clunky plastic walkway material and want to put new in-scale walkway material on it.  But I can't seem to find a product meant for this.  Tichy products makes a kit for building walkways (it also has handrails that I would not use) that perhasp could be adapted and Plano Products makes grated walkways for roofwalks and other purposes that I might be able to adapt - not sure.  I thought plastruct might have something but if they do I can't find it.  Any recommendations??  Thanks!

Either Details Associates or Details West probably has the items for which you are searching.

Thanks.  I had checked Detail Associates with no luck, and as far as I can tell Details West does not either.  One of them has a boxcar roofwalk which again might work - if I can't find another proven solution I will have to try converting a building walkway, roofwalk, etc.

That squigly thing that looks like a dollar sign is called an ampersand and it is an HTML code word for do something else.  It doesn't work well in thread titles.

Diesels is a broad category.  The Cannon & Co. products may work. http://shop.cannonandco.net/category.sc;jsessionid=668356BFB121E7B19554D5E7CF873535.p3plqscsfapp001?categoryId=16

Hi,

I'm familiar with the Tichy platform and it is a representation of a "bar-grate" open platform, plus it has stiffener ribs molded in that would be very difficult to sand off.

Try this:

 Or here?

You do not mention what particular locomotive you are detailing so I can only offer general help.

Here's Plano's listing for diamond plate safety tread:

[EDIT] I just noticed Big Daddy's link to Cannon & Co. mine are redundant.

Regards, Ed

nyoandw:

I'm not sure exactly what pattern you are looking for, but here are a couple of possibilities:

Styrene diamond tread sheets:

http://www.micromark.com/JTT-Plastic-Pattern-Sheets-HO-Scale-Diamond-Plate-75-x12-Sheets-2-Sheets-per-Pkg,10409.html

Brass micro mesh from Scale Scenics (Circuitron):

http://www.circuitron.com/index_files/prices/Scale_Scenics_2013.pdf

A-Line makes etched brass step kits. (This is the Canadian listing):

http://www.ebay.ca/sch/i.html?_odkw=A-Line&_osacat=19128&_from=R40&_trksid=p2045573.m570.l1313.TR0.TRC0.H0.XA-Line+diesel+steps.TRS0&_nkw=A-Line+diesel+steps&_sacat=19128

If you could be more specific about the type of locomotive and the walkway pattern that you want it might help with the suggestions.

Would surface texture decals work?  Archer makes a variety of tread plate decal textures that might be an easy way to ad this detail:

Go to the surface details tab to check this out.

Hi all, thanks for the suggestions.  This is going on an Alco RS 3.  I don't really want to say the brand it is or you won't take me seriously in this effort!  I own a couple recent Atlas RS3s, but this one has big sentimental value so is being turned into a dummy unit with cosmetic upgrades so it can run with my DCC units.

I've used the Archer decals myself and worked great and don't add any additional thickness. There are a couple different types depending on what you are modeling.

Precision Scale sells an assortment of brass safety grid stuff.  It's 5x7 and comes in 10 different versions.

Thanks everyone for the info and recommendations.  I had been convinced that the Atlas RS 3s had a grating pattern for the walkways, as some EMDs that I have have.  But I thought I should have a look - the classic I have has no pattern at all, and the more recent version has a diamond tread - so I think I am going to get a diamond tread for my project.  I am going to look into the decal approach too.  I will take any more suggestions too, but thanks for the help!

an added option would be to imbed tule(sp) in a layer of paint , have done this in past and looks ok.
