Hello camanoe, I'd stick with an 18" minimum radius, even for narrow gauge, to ensure smooth operation. However, you could probably pinch this down to 13" to 15" without a problem in places where the Shays will be operating. Those 2-8-0 Mudhens still have a long wheel base and will appreciate a more generous radius, though. The rule of thumb with minimum radius is to use the most generous practically possible for your chosen scale, not dipping under the recommended minimum. Narrow gauge gives you a little more leeway in this regard. Hope this helps, Paul Schmidt Contributing Editor Trains.com
