Apparently Lego trains have no problems with 'S' curves.

I'm just a dude with a bad back having a lot of fun with model trains, and finally building a layout!

Bear,Some times I watch several of that guy's videos just to remind me how simple and fun the hobby can be.
That Lego layout is fantasic.
I had the same asperation back in the 40's with my Lionel train, but it never came to be. Ken
I have watched a video about a group of model railroaders visiting Norm Charbonneau´s hi-rail O gauge layout and, boy, were they enjoying themseves!
Leaves me with a hunch that we may take our hobby a little bit too serious - sometimes, I think - or shouldn´t I have said that here

Model Railroading is NOT fun. It is serious business. That's why MR removed that slogan from their magazine and why Whit Towers was fired as editor of the NMRA Bulletin. That's why Kalmbach kicked all those toy train guys over to their own magazine. People were just having too much fun in this hobby.
It's time everyone learn how to run a railraod properly with lots of paperwork and rules. Before anyone runs a train they have to pass a rules test.
And NO more biffy building.
Paul
I agree! No more pulling 36' reefers with SD90MACs! No more whimsical industry names or business! Just add a long list of no more this and that since this is a serious hobby!
Gotta say....... When I was 11-13 in the late '50s and had a 20x8 Lionel layout, I truly had more pure FUN than I've had with any of the "fancy" HO layouts since.
ENJOY !

There are times, when I am pondering to "chuck all that fancy scale stuff" and go back to my roots, which were a tiny Marklin HO tinplate layout, similar to the one shown in the following video:
I still have this beauty for a start:
Over nearly 10 years, I enjoyed this type of layout, just pure fun and no worry about "getting it right!
However -
- is it possible to bring back the joy we had when we were children?
Ulrich
Sir Madog- is it possible to bring back the joy we had when we were children?
Isn't that what most of us are trying to do? Personally, I think I'm having more fun now because I can actually afford to buy some of the stuff that was beyond my wildest dreams when I was a kid.

Sure, toss the so called hobby rules of, do this, not that we didn't know when we was kids.
I would love to break out a Hobbytown RS-3 or a Hobbytown powered Athearn GP7 and switch cars in a large club freight yard. Some of my fondest memories is doing just that at the old Columbus HO Club back in 64-66.
The RS-3 was NYC 5344 and the GP7 was NYC 5712 painted in the simple black with white frame with a NYC herald on the cab. The fact the real 5712 didn't have a weatherization hatch never bother me.
I was very proud of those engines because I built the RS-3 and the GP7 drive and painted and decaled the shells and they look and ran great.

I always wanted to have that famous Marklin Swiss Crocodile, but never got it. It was the most expensive loco Marklin offered in my childhood days. In later years, my wife gave me the above "Crocodile" - well, the dealer told her it is one ...
Today, the old Crocs fetch prices on Ebay which are out of this world! I´ll never get that Croc!
Ulrich,
I have seen more than a few models that I would like to have. Rapido's Canadian Pacific 'Canadian' set is just one of them. This past week I actually bid on a brass 4-6-0 in Dominion Atlantic colours. Alas, it went for more than three times what I was willing to pay. I guess I was in one of those fantasy moments where I hoped nobody else would notice the listing. HA! Fat chance of that happening!
Anyhow, to sooth my battered nerves, last night I found a Proto 1000 RDC Dayliner in Canadian Pacific maroon and gold for a reasonably good price so I bought it! I now have three RDCs, two in the CP livery and one in Dominion Atlantic, so I will be able to run a nice consist. I don't give a hoot if it is prototypical or not.
Six feet five inches eh?!? Big bugger oops, big guy!
I'm only 6' 2". I find it rather disconcerting when I meet a taller person. I'm so used to looking down at people (in the best possible sense) that looking up at someone is somewhat disorienting. None the less, I enjoy meeting anyone new, regardless of their stature.
All the best Ulrich!
Regards,
Well, tickled by the Lego train video I made a trip upstairs into the spider-infested attic and started searching for some old train stuff I knew I had stowed away in some of those unopened boxes up there. Heureka! I found a few lengths of old Marklin track and a power pack!
In no time, the track was set up and the power pack connected. I put my old Marklin loco on the track, applied a little bit of power and - it ran! Just like a charm! After being relegated to shelf duty for 25+ years!
Talking about quality! Alas, they don´t make `em like that anymore!
The diecast zinc alloy body looks as pristine as ever and the lettering is still crisp - wonderful!
I gave her a full service and I promise it won´t take another 25 years until she runs the next time!
I toyed with an idea for a nostalgic Marklin layout to give that loco a place to run. This is what I came up with (am I allowed to post it here or do I get kicked to the CTT site?):
Ulrich,What a fun looking basic layout.
I've stood in awl looking at a Lionel O-27 layout on a 36" x 80" hollow core door and I found that simple layout very interesting since it had some industry switching.
Note to self: Don't show this to my 4-year old twin boys! They would want me to put one even larger in the house. I remember playing with Legos when I was young. They are even better now since I have three kids who also love them. Of course, my daugther loves the Friends sets. She even told me how many she has today before school! Can I pls stop seeing pink and purple bricks in my sleep?
