Pink foam rockwork
Posted by rs2mike on Wednesday, March 16, 2016 2:42 PM

For all of you using pink foam for terrain how do you or what are your processs to paint rockwork?

do you start black and work your way lighter or start light with progessively darker colors?

I made a small diorama a few years ago and though i like the look but i want  to make it more betterer. Sorry could not resist. I am making a little roundy round on our unused pool table for the kiddos until, they get old enough to get rid of of all their big toys in the toy room. I Have a few buildings up and have a bunch of trees stuck in some foam but decided to make it look better.  So Last night i carved some 2" pink foam into a hill and rock face.  Got the hill painted now i want to paint the rock work.

Last time I think started with brown then went to black then highlighted with white drybrush.  I watched a Dave frary vid on you tube and the guy started with black then started highlighting with different spray colors but they did not say what the colors were.

thanks

mike

Mike,

I made my "mountains" out of pink foam. After cutting, slicing and carving, I painted all of the foam with a flat black latex paint and "highlighted" the nooks and crannies with grey, white and even light bgrown paint, using the dry-brushing technique.

This is the result:

I cover the pink foam with Plaster of Paris (PoP).  This product holds the paint a bit and creates small rocks that mimic the texture of a rock face.  I also use the PoP to create plaster rocks/boulders that I glue with Liquid Nails to the rock face.

After I get the rock surface, I then paint the surface with gray and highlight with black or white using a fine-tip brush

Well, I don´t see how you can highlight something with a black color Whistling

I use a flat, delta-shaped brush with hardly any paint on it.

Carved the foam, added plaster to fill in unwanted gaps, painted base ground color, and then layered with india-ink washes and highlighted with different paints.....

Good ideas. I have been doing a lot of searchingon pintrest.  lots of ideas there. Wasted 1/2 a day rumaging through all the stuff.  War gamers have some neat ideas for things as do armour modelers.
